1966 Mustang GT, AZ car - SOLD
SOLD - My car has been SOLD!!
Ok, I guess I have been "jones-ing" about a 'vert too long.
1966 factory A code, GT coupe (not a clone), orig. 4spd, Candy Apple Red w/Pony int:
I believe it was bought new at Don Sanderson in Glendale, AZ. It spent most of its life in AZ and TX which means it is VERY solid car.
ENGINE: 289 was rebuilt to factory HiPo specs at Sanderson in AZ; 271hp, solid lifters, HiPo heads, balancer, exhaust manifolds, etc., SHELBY intake, Autolite 4100 4V, MSD ignition with MSD billet dist., COBRA open-letter valve covers, 4-row radiator, etc. I wanted it to look vintage as possible so I put the housing of the dist. in backwards to hide the MSD tag and I dremeled off the MSD on the cap and repainted it black. I used the MSD “off-road” module, which is black and sealed better and mounted it down underneath the original style washer bag.
TRANS: Original 4 speed was swapped for a (rebuilt) world class T5 5 speed with CENTERFORCE clutch, with HURST shifter and stock style shift arm. The engine turns at 2 grand at 70 mph now and gets as high as 23 mpg.
BODY: is very straight with very good gaps at the panels. I have been all over with a magnet and found a very little amount of mud in the driver’s rear quarter. It has all of its original/factory sheet metal and it appears that it has been re-painted only once in the factory color. I have found absolutely NO rust underneath, but it now has a bubble in the lower front corner of each door. (Most of us know that is from a poor design where the water that runs down the glass has a problem getting out of the bottom of the door.) I tried to take a pic last night, but they are small and behind the stripe, so they wouldn't show up. But, this way you know exactly what you are going to get, not a car that was bondo’d over and painted last week. Paint is around 10 years old. It shows very well but is not perfect, several touched up rock chips.
Tail lights have new lenses, bezels and have been converted to LED sequintials for added safety.
INTERIOR: black "PONY Interior" with the wood grain dash (LED lights for guages), RALLY-PAC with 8 grand tach and working clock, '65 Shelby MOTO-LITA wood steering wheel. Stock look AM/FM radio that also plays mp3 and has a 6 CD changer in trunk. It has a dual-voice speaker in the dash and MEMPHIS 6x9 speakers in package shelf have black metal grills to look stock as possible.
SUSPENSION: front end has factory KELSEY HAYES discs with an adjustable proportion valve. The rare/stock KELSEY HAYES valve had a leak but comes with car. It is lowered with COBRA Automotive springs and KYB shocks. The rear is a 9” with 11” drums and 3.50 gears. It has COBRA Automotive 1” lowering blocks and KONI adjustable shocks. The cars handles great, but still surprises people at how well it actually rides.
WHEELS: extremely rare ‘65/66 SHELBY Cragar 15x6 wheels with P205/70R15 BFG Traction T/A’s. I tried to get the same look as the GoodYear Blue dots Carroll Shelby put on the wheels originally.
EXHAUST: since it has the HiPo 289, I installed the rare ARVINODE exhaust designed for the HiPo. After getting all the correct style hangers, etc., it was not cheap, but it sounds exactly the way I wanted it; louder than stock, but not too loud and very “old school” sounding. I also noticed the increase in horsepower and torque. Factory GT trumpet exhaust tips.
Ice COLD A/C, with correct '66 underdash unit and upgraded SANDEN compressor (134a). I added a kick-up solenoid off of a later model Autolite carb, so it still idles great at stop signs. I can run the A/C and drive in 100+ afternoons with no heating problems.
It does extremely well at car shows and has won a ton of awards and was even photographed by MUSTANG MONTHLY in June of last year, so hopefully it will be in the next issue. But, I also love to drive it on cruises and to shows several states away. I drove it to the 45th anniversary show in Birmingham, AL with no problems.
Including original purchase price and upgrades I have close to 30 grand invested. Hagerty has it insured for 33. I will sell to someone on the forum for 19,000. Send me an email or PM and give me your email address and I can send all of the detailed pics you need. The car is located just north of Wichita, Ks.
Thanks for looking (and spending time to read my book)
