I hav been looking on Craislist, ebay and other sites looking around for a stang. I have come across a few in my area 65-66 coupes but they all have the inline six, the prices for these are in the $5,000-$6,000 range. Is this too much for a six cylinder?
Is there much difference horsepower wise from the inline six to the V8? What would it entail converting to a V8 engine....hmmm?
I will keep scouring the newspaper, internet sites etc all over the country until I find one....keeping in mind what you said. Thanks again for ur help
For an I6 coupe in good shape, $5,000-$6,000 seems reasonable to me. And by "good shape", I mean the body is in very good shape; little or no rust, few or no major dents.
If you really want a V8 Mustang, hold out for a V8 Mustang. Converting an I6 to a V8 is certainly doable. And people do it all the time. But it's much more involved than most people realize. In 65 and 66, the I6 Mustangs were very different cars from the V8 Mustangs. Brakes, spindles, suspension, differential and other features must be replaced. It all gets pretty involved. So, I think you're better off just getting an original, V8 Mustang.
Which brings me to my next point. Do a lot of research so you can identify a Mustang by the VIN and the door tag. You need to know how the car left the factory. The more options the car had, the higher the price. Also, you don't want to buy an I6 Mustang that had a V8 stuffed into it with no other upgrades.
FYI, I wanted a 1969 or 1970 Mach 1 project. I looked for a long time and prices were high. I considered compromising and getting a regular fastback. But a good friend of mine encouraged me to hold out for the Mustang I wanted. We looked at a '70 Mach 1 that I was really excited about. But it was completely rusted out from the frame rails to the cowl. Then I finally found my car near the Mexican border. It was rough, but the frame rails and torque boxes were solid. I've been working on the car for almost two years. It's tough, but at least it's for the car I really wanted! (It's even an original shaker car.)
So, hold out. Take your time and find the car you want. Also decide what options you really want. It's better to find a car that already has disc brakes and power steering, if you really want those options. But if everything else about the car is amazing, it's not difficult to add those options yourself.
Or you could buy a complete Dynacorn Bodied car on the Bay and find a cheap rotted donor for all the trim and stuff and virtually have a brand new car when you are done.

Apparently, you haven't been following the Dynacorn body build thread by Rusty. A customer wanted a Dynacorn body and he couldn't find one new. Rusty found one that someone had bought and didn't use. Every step of the way, he's finding problems with the Dynacorn body.
And, BTW, even if you can get a Dyancorn body, they're crazy expensive. A Dynacorn body is practical for an very high end, very expensive custom build and not much else.
Well if u were interested in a clean restored coupe from Tn, well i have 65 289 C code Auto with air, motor, trans, brakes, tires, front-end and interior rebuilt, motor only has around 500 since total rebuild already painted and currently completed, ready to go for 12 and its rust free, show or daily driver.
I have a 66' coupe that is a special edition car...Anniversary Gold...1-of-50 all built on the same day in San Jose to celebrate Ford building 1 million Mustangs by 1966. C-code A/T, P/S, P/B, black deluxe interior with original woodgrain appointments...not someone making it into a pony interior. It is in daily driver condition with rust issues already dealt with. Contact me back here with a PM if you are interested. Not a fastback but a rare Mustang that everyone will notice with that gorgeous eye-poping gold paint.

Here might be one for you. I saw as Iam looking for a 64 1/2 but in looking into this car it is actually an 65 made in San Jose. Here is the link to the ad and a link to the pics he has on Facebook. Maybe this will help as it looks solid for the money. The guys name is Ruben and he seems really nice. let me know how you make out on this. 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang "Project Car" AS IS
Here is the website I was talking about in case you were unable to find it. I wish I knew about it when I was buying my coupe, I would have gotten a better deal
If I found something worthwhile I would travel the distance to check out mustangs in the southern CA area....I am due east of CA off the I-10 highway. So what area county wud be a good starting point to look for fixer upper stangs in CA? I will check out Hemmings although I am not looking for polished expensive car more towards a solid project car. I am specifically looking for a 65 coupe, fastback wud be great if I cud find one and a V8 289...I will look start with your suggestions Thanks Sam
Inland Impire (San bernardino, Riverside Counties)- prices would typically be lower in those areas as compared to Sandiego, Orange & Los Angeles
Your car really sounds like a gem but I am looking for something to restore myself and have fun throughout that rebuild....Thanks again.
