Default Buck tag screw

Anyone know where i can buy the screw to hold the buck tag in place. Was a sort of flat headed screw with a phillips head that came off, which is now lost! Car is a 66 Metuchen.

Ian.

Ian if I recall correctly, our cars are pretty close on production. If you're sure it was the flat head style, I'm seem to recall AMK sells one. It's not listed for the buck tag. I'll try to dig the application out and let you know. Mine came with the "standard" round head phillips screw.

Ian.
Not sure if 100% correct but I used a truss hd screw. Same one used for conv well liner and "A" pillar molding trim.

Thanks guy's. John you are correct my 66 has a build date of 11 nov 65. It was 100% a flat head, i do have a picture of the tag before removal but it is not on this computer. Will try and find it.

Just checking to be sure Ian. No need to go to the trouble looking for the pic. It seems they used the two different styles interchangeably.

Anything is possible, I doubt they really cared much in the front office, but typically they had a wafer head screw. You can get these new, if you want.

Yup... The well liner screws... That's the ticket... You got it. It's the correct one. However, Some Metuchen cars also came with seldom seen Mushroom headed screws as well used on the BUCK TAGS. They are also correct, and the head is a million times smaller. The well liner screw is the most common though.

Although it's getting off topic, where the idea came from that the flat head attaching screw is THE most common or typical, and the round head screw is uncommon is beyond me. Since I have dealt primarily with Metuchen built cars through the years, one style has appeared no more commonly than the other. It's been a pretty equal mix between the two. As the scheduled build date of Ian's car is only several weeks apart from mine, it also demonstrates there's also no specific time frame either was used.

Here's an interesting site with a variety of buck tags posted:
1965-66 Buck Tag information

While some are obviously replacement screws, many appear to be original. Again, one style is no more common than the other. It basically comes down to knowing which one was on your particular car. Lacking this information, either would be considered correct.

I'm sorry to jump in with a question.

Installation of this buck tag to the inner guard, before/after engine bay painted black?

Regards Darryl

Darryl,

I am by no means an expert, but i would assume that the engine bay was painted, then the buck tag attached, and the again painted in place, just my thoughts. Anyone else?

Ian.

Most tags I have found were just attached on bare metal and painted over bare metal.. Lots of them are actually "fused" to the panel sometimes.. but I would say that either way would be acceptable. No MCA points off that I know of for this..
