Can't see what type of tire it is from the pic. Is it a BF Goodrich? Should be F78-14 if I remember correctly. Can't tell the details.... Can you look and repost?
We are getting some good snow right now so I can't go and take some pics. I do know it is BF Goodrich. I want to say it said 70x14 for the size. Will check once I can open the garage door again without snow blowing everywhere.

F78-14 was full size tire. This is space saver!

The Boss 351 standard wheel/tire combo was the F60-15 tire. The F78-14 space saver is the right size space saver because your Mach 1 had the F60-15 tire option.
"Note the correct '71 space saver spare will have one standard 1" rubber valve stem. In the mid 70's, Ford switched to a metal stem that had a built in pressure relief valve. "
The picture you have has the double relief valve and if the above information is correct, then this isn't the EXACT spare for your Mustang (and your dad is probably right, it would have been black, not orange).
Google enough, and you find some other forum that has enough information that might point to your spare being a D70-14 out of an AMC car, because they argue just like we do about things like if the orange side was up or down:
Sorry I blew up! I should have known better. The inflatible space saver was later an option on the 75-80 Granada/Monarch.

thanks for the good info with links. I looked them over and I now know that my space saver tire is from an AMC. It is the same tire that is in on the AMC forum. THANKS SO MUCH!
I now need to decide what to use for a spare. Any vendors out there where I can just buy a correct steel rim?
Here is a web site that will help . 71 429 CJ Mustang and Cougar Megasite Once you get to the site click on ( trunk ) catagory it will show you what you are looking for.
From looking at the same AMC site, the bolt patterns match up, the AMC wheel has a bigger center hole. If you don't think you'll actually ever use the wheel (would you really inflate it and put it on if you have a flat?, all the space saver stuff is expensive!), then paint it black and put it in the trunk and I don't think an MCA judge would ever notice.
BTW, I'm a certified judge in several years, and I haven't ever known anyone to pay that much attention to the spare, jack and handles (except me).
I located and purchased a correct (i think) space saver for my car and also came across a 15x7 plane steel rim to use a spare. So now I have the correct space saver tire for looks and originality and a functional spare if I ever need it.
I wonder how much I should try and sell the AMC space saver for?
Hi-Just came for a visit from the AMC Forum. Yes, the orange is an AMC wheel.. other companies had other colors-I had a Pontiac with a grey wheel. Some info:
The wheels came out in Feb 1968 and the first car they were in was the AMX, which also came out then. There were a variety of cannister shapes and labels, to include a generic one from BF Goodrich. Mopar used a long, thinner canister. AMC even had an "extreme cold weather" cannister.
Two points-the rims were special for the tire, so you shouldn't just get a rim if you want to use it. The rims have date codes stamped on them, same as the tire. Should clarify the valve stem. The original stem was a single piece, but the tires would blow off the rim and seriously injure people. The rim was supposed to be bolted to the drum before inflation but some people inflated it off the car. BF Goodrich had a recall on the rims and sent a notice out to all owners of all makes and models. A special chrome typer dual stem (with pressure relief) was added free of charge, and a decal was sent out to put on the rim. Here is a copy of the letter and decal I got for my 1970 AMX:
It looks like a Space-Saver. The Ford one should be Painted Semi-Gloss Black. An Original Ford Steel Wheel will have (FoMoCo) or (FORD) and a Date Code,App. Stamped on 2 of the 5 NUBS that surround the Lug Stud Holes.
