Default 1970 Mach 1 California Emissions Equip and Tank

I have a 1970 Mach 1. It was built in San Jose and is fitted with the California emissions parts and tank. Although they are good condition, I don't really want to put them back in, as I am not doing a concours restoration. I heard the California emissions tank was smaller then the regular tank. Can I just fit in the regular style tank, without any issues??

Cheers

You can use the regular tank without problem, just make sure to use a vented gas cap (The California emissions set used a non-vented cap, which can lead to collapsing the tank from the fuel pump sucking fuel out of the tank.)
The two gallon lower rating was a result of the inserts that went into the tank for trapping vapors.

Your emissions tank is probably worth a few bucks to someone doing a concourse restoration on a California car.

I will try and post a picture of it. The outside looks to be in very good condition, I will try and see what the inside looks like.

I have a 1970 mustang built in San Jose with the evaporative emissions stuff in the trunk. The tank is full of rust so I need a new one. If I order a new tank from NPD (none evaporative) do I need a new cap also or can I modify my existing sealed cap.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do.
If all you want is a working tank without the CA emissions, the tank itself is a drop in. You'll need a non-CA emissions filler hose, and a vented fuel cap. Other than that, its just a matter of removing the extra plimbing for the vapor lines. A non-vented cap can be drilled to provide a vent.
If you're trying to duplicate the CA emissions set up, its a bigger job, as the inlet to the tank is different between a CA tank and a standard tank, among other things.
