Want to flush the cooling system and need to run the solvent through the heater core as well. I was taught with old cars that if you are just getting started restoring it and you don't NEED to turn something on, don't, it will probably just break and cause a problem with something else. So, I haven't tried my heater yet at all. I have looked it over as best as possible and am really surprised how clean it is. Looks like it rolled off the line yesterday.

Anything I should do before I turn it on for the first time? Any tips? Thanks, just trying to be proactive.

Gas Tank Clean Out?

I am working on getting a 67 ready to start that has sat in a garage for a long time. As I turn my attention to the fuel system I have discovered that the tank was drained before it was put up. I cut the fuel line and blew a little gas out of the line that goes to the engine bay, but that was it. The tank show no rust on the exterior. The trunk side of it looks brand new.

My question is...shall I take it to a radiator shop to have it cleaned, or can I get away with pouring a gallon of solvent (lacquer thinner?) in it and letting that sit for awhile before draining it?

As many of us are fighting the rust battle, I was resigned that while what I was doing was as much as I could do, I could never approach what is done...

As many of us are fighting the rust battle, I was resigned that while what I was doing was as much as I could do, I could never approach what is done with new cars.

I had my car dipped 9 years ago, before I stared the body work. The reason I had it dipped was I thought it would get rust out of the the lap joints on the car. As I proceeded to cut off various panels, I could see the rust was still in between.

Now I have the added problem of rust starting everywhere, because the car was bare.

In retrospect, I've wondered if I should have had the car immediately epoxy primed, but that would have really made the rust repair more difficult. Plus, I don't have a time machine to go back and have it done.

I've been using a product called "Picklex 20" to keep the areas I can see under control, and I add weld through primer whenever I'm replacing anything, but I worry about all the hidden nooks and crannies I can't get into.

I wasn't sure what I'd do after the rust repair and panel replacement is done. Picklex, near as i can tell has some acid in it. I've seen some threads of people saying epoxy primer doesn't adhere as well over metal treated with acid. Plus there are spots where there is still some surface rust, and weird chalkiness from the picklex. I've thought that after the metal work is done, I'd get the car blasted then epoxy primed. of course I've heard horror stories about blasting ruining bodies, and the inaccessible area problem would still exist.

Tonight, while surfing around the net, I found that there are now "dippers" that will ecoat afterwards!

Of course my luck when I call they'll tell me the car can't be dipped a second time, or after picklex 20 has been used. Even if it can be done, it seems the nearest places are in Michigan or Louisiana, and I'm in eastern PA. That doesn't seem very convenient and even without transportation costs, it doesn't sound inexpensive.

The thought of walking into my garage and seeing my shell with all my hard work, ecoated for posterity, does seem like it would be priceless...

I have a 1967 convertible and going to rebuild the front suspension.
Car has about 350 hp its a daily driver street car ,zero track time. I want a suspension that is quiet no squeaking , no whining, emphasis is on a nice ride first and foremost and handling is secondary. Willing to spend up to 3k if neccessary I have a flaming river manual rack that is older generation and 1970 mustang spindles and 245/45/17 all around. Shelby drop is already done on the car.

Option 1 is do the full tcp coil over the lower control arm. (buy the whole kit in the pic below.

Option 2 is to do just the tcp coil over on the stock UCA and eliminate the roller perches with this option. Use the TCP varishick and VR spring.Buy the one in the pic below.

Option 3 is rebuild all the stock stuff and add koni shocks.

Looking for a quiet noise free, no metal rubbing, no whining polyurethane bushing ride. I dont mind spending the money budget is 3k only if it gets the results I want. Any of went from stock suspension to option 1 I know you handling improved a lot , but did it turn your ride into a dump truck/bus ride. Was it a lot worse than stock i.e. noticebly worse.

Hi everyone,

Just rebuilt my 65 SJ 200 six motor and ordered an AMK engine fastener kit. Compared to the original exhaust manifold bolts, the AMK bolts are about 1/8" longer. Which prevents me from torquing the bolts. I can if I run a tap through the front and rear top four holes, because they run clear through. The stock ones, since they were shorter never had to go all the way through since they were a bit shorter. No problem I can do that, but what I'm concerned about are the blind holes that go into the head. I dont want to try to torque those and strip them or break the head or bolts.

Has anyone run into this problwem with AMK replacement exhaust bolts?

Thanks,
Greg

I had 80/90 fossil gear oil before- no drips. After researching/reading the forums I thought this would be the best gear oil to go with- now I'm not so sure. Any problem with blending gear oils- say half MT90 and half something else that's heavier weight? Any comments appreciated. Thanks

I landed some cheap Cragar S/S rims a long time ago. For whatever reason, I thought they were 14x7, but they actually measure 15.5" across. Am I measuring the right thing? I'm tempted to measure the circumference of the "middle?" to see what that diameter is.

I think what has me most confused is that places like tirerack don't make any mention of a 15.5" rim...16.5, 17.5, 19.5....no 15.5. I'm hoping somebody here can tell me that I'm measuring them wrong, or that 15.5" tires are normally sold at a significant discount (hey, I guy can hope, can't he?).

Lastly, I measure 3.5" backspacing. I have drums now with a stock suspension, but dream of going disc eventually. With that backspacing, am I wasting my time with these rims anyway?

thanks.

NEWS Release

I copied this from an email I rec'd, here ya go:

Texas Shelby 350 to celebrate high performance with national event for American muscle cars.

· Three day event includes road rally, track time, drive-in movie, car show and banquet

· Shelby American Test Driver Gary Patterson to speak at dinner

· Limited number of registration and hotel rooms available

American muscle car owners are invited to enjoy a three day high performance weekend during the Texas Shelby 350 on Oct. 7–9, 2010, in North Texas. The event will feature track activities, a drive-in movie, banquet, a car show and road rally in the beautiful Hill Country foothills. Endorsed by Shelby American, the event will also feature factory test driver Gary Patterson as a guest speaker. The public is invited to see the free car show on Saturday, Oct. 9.

“This event was created to give people who love muscle cars a chance to enjoy them in a variety of ways before winter sets in,” explained event co-founder Jim Wicks. “They can participate in as many or as few of the activities as they wish from non-competitive track days to a romp through wonderful Texas back roads. It’s the perfect way to explore the capabilities of a muscle car.”

The Texas Shelby GT350 is expected to attract Ford, GM and Chrysler performance cars from across the US and Canada. Shelby, Mustang, Corvette, Camaro, Viper and MOPAR clubs have also expressed interest in being represented at the three day motorsport extravaganza.

The event will be on the shores of Lake Granbury at the Hilton Garden Inn in Granbury, Texas; a few rooms are still available at the hotel. The track portion on Thursday and Friday will be at the legendary Motorsport Ranch in nearby Cresson. The group will caravan Friday night to the historic Brazos Drive-in Theater for a current feature film. On Saturday, participants will enjoy a car show and spirited drive in the Texas foothills.

Gary Patterson, Shelby American vice president of operations and Test Drive will speak at the event. An avid enthusiast, Gary has raced everything from tricycles to sports cars. His first car was a 1969 428 CJ Mach 1 Mustang; he still owns it today, as well as a ZR1 Corvette and Shelby Super Snake.

American Muscle Cars to Rumble at Texas 350

Gary has been deeply involved in Open Road Racing for decades. In addition to driving in the event, he served on the Board of Directors and was Race Director of the Silver State Classic Challenge Open Road Race. Gary helped start the Sandhills Open Road Challenge and co-drove the factory entry Shelby Terlingua Racing Team Mustang at the Big Bend Open Road Race. He served as President of the Las Vegas Mustang Club, Vice President of Competition for the Central Buckeye Corvette Association and was an NCRS judge. At the Mid America Shelby Ford event each year, Gary acts as a driving instructor.

“This event demonstrates the spirit of Shelby American today, where we deliver high performance products for serious enthusiasts,” added Gary Patterson. “Recently, we expanded our services with a new Speed Shop to turn the wick up on all American performance vehicles. The Texas Shelby 350 reflects our philosophy of celebrating American muscle and I look forward to being part of this inaugural event.”
