More.

Adding a lot of rocks. So at this point. They assured me everything was on track, and they wanted to finish the job correctly.

Then past the point of no return.
F'ing up concrete.

The yellow lines are supposed to be where the foundation is. I don't think these folks can color well either. I wonder if the can drive between the lines also.

Never in my 35 years as a carpenter have I seen forms that bad. With that kind of work they won't be in business long.
Israel and DrHawkeye like this.

Its not illegal to be stupid just highly inconvenient.

SO.
WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?
WHAT? Does an average Joe like me do.
This is REAL bad I know. Don't make me feel worse. I can't sleep already, and I have no appetite.
Solutions would be good.

holy. hell.

If they're just the forms, and get buried, can you still build square walls on them? If so, cut these guys loose and get somebody new. Just not worth it at this point. Maybe have the inspector come out to look at it, and if there's a state licensing board I'd complain to them too.

Worst case scenario you can't build square walls at the dimensions you need, where you need them. If that's the case, sue. If not, then worst case is you have some seriously overbuilt footings.

Don't let yourself get worked up, it still is just the footings at this point. It all gets buried and you don't have to have this company finish the job.

I mean they suck at carpentry but I google searched "garage concrete footings" and there were some that looked like yours. Maybe it's not that big a deal.

I wouldn't trust them to do any more work. Even if it meant waiting until spring.

I keep noticing the DOT puts up signs to honor my burnouts. That's nice of them.

I just called the city building inspector. He will be here in an hour to inspect the footing.
They normally don't inspect footings. They only do 2 inspections.
The first inspection is to make sure all of the old foundation has been removed from the site.
The second inspection is to make sure the trench is deep enough.
I will see what he thinks, and what he recommends.

The thing that burns my A$$ is this. I told them on Monday to get some real footing forms. That I was pretty sure, even with my very limited knowledge of cement, and foundations, that in no way would the forms they were making work. I was assured that their forms would work.
My common sense is usually correct.
OSB V.S. Cement. DUH!

No advice sag, I really feel for you! We have the same floating slab requirement.

The land where I built had been contoured/graded with earth-movers before sub dividing and building. Code requires foundation to go below the original frost line. My attached garage has 9' (foot) walls down to foundation. A big plus is the garage hasn't settled vs the house.

Years from now this garage episode will be one of the tales grandpa tells along walking 2 miles to school uphill through the snow. The grandkids will roll their eyes and say yah right! LOL!

He said it looks high.
I am having the city do another grade stake.
He gave me the contact # of a reputable concrete person that might be able to help me.
He see's a few issues. He agrees that it is absolutely horrible work. He told me to get the grade stake done again.
Then he can help me get a game plan together to fix this.
My brain hurts.
I hate not having answers, and being in limbo.
I am now trying to hold off, on them doing the block work, until I get some more opinions, and inspections. I am trying to do this without them getting wind of it.

Not sure about there, but here in Idaho if a city, county or state inspector says "NO GOOD" the contractor has to remove and replace on their dime. I spent 4 years as a building super and another 3 years as a land developer. Nothing that they have done so far would have passed my inspection or one of my City inspectors. Unfortunately there are times where you have to be there and hold their hand while they do the work.
I feel bad for you and the situation you are in, but hold them accountable for their lack of knowledge and work ethic.
