Since getting my toolbox, it has been somewhat challenging trying to figure out how to organize it. My box has 23 drawers of different sizes, so space is not that much of an issue right now. I finally found a good socket organization system that comes in 18" rails with stand-up clips for sockets. The rails are made by Ernst, and so far I really like them. The only thing that sucks is my 1/2" deep sockets won't clear the drawers if I stand them up on the 4 rail stands. Anyway, thought I would share what I've done, might give some of you ideas.

So, I thought I had enough space when I got the large Mac Tool Box on the right with 23 drawers, a few years back. I guess I had more tools than I figured, stored just about everywhere, because in no time it was filled. About 2 years ago I bought another large stainless toolbox from Costco for $650. That is the box on the right....Guess what? Now it is completely filled!

After much fiddling of different methods (years ago) I finally settled on having the great majority of my sockets in the very top of the top box, standing up. Though I've messed with various socket holders I've always gone back to the old cheapo "rails" with clips. These often have a "handle" section which I either discard or cut off. Once I get my sockets loaded and fiddled around to my satisfaction (smallest up front for visibility, etc) I screw the racks to the box. A less permanent solution is high qualtiy double sided "emblem" tape which lasts about a year or so.
Works great for me. I can have nearly all my usual sockets where I can clearly see them. All I have to do is flip the lid up. They're easy to snatch up and missing ones are easily noticed. A nice benefit of having fixed positions for your regularly used sockets is that after a while you can reach and grab the one you want rather having to squint at the markings on them.
This is actually only about my "main" toolbox. The Mustang has it's own work/parts bench and smaller set of 3/8" sockets (no metric stuff). I have a big set of mostly metrics in a big plastic Craftsman box that I carry back and forth to work. Each socket has it's own clearly marked spot. I have to replace this box every year or so as I wear them out.
The motorcycle has it's own small personal set of sockets that stays in it's tool bag.
And I have one "old school" metal carry box that contains what I call the "big boys". I have to carry it to work sometimes but prefer to let it sit somewhere, it's fricking heavy. It also has socket "racks" lined up in it's bottom.
Lastly, I have a plastic bucket that I dump all the duplicates and Taiwan sockets in.
