I found a card on my front door from the "U.S. Office of Personnel Management Federal Investigative Services". OPM Form 1634 August 2005

There are some areas with hand written info instructing me to contact "Special Agent Gonzalez".

I've Googled.

It looks pseudo official, but my BSometer is at full tilt. Anyone seen something like this before?

Know anybody that might have used you for a personal reference, applying with the government.

I don't see why it wouldn't hurt to contact them and see what's up. Just wouldn't be giving any personal info.

Some one you know or are related too might be getting a higher securty clearance at their jobs and they're just checking on referances noted in their the application.

Yup, I just called. My neighbor applied for area 51 or some crap. They probably want to know if aliens or Russians have been BBQing at his house.

I worked as a federal agent before and some jobs require background checks, some checks are performed by the FBI, others by Secret Service, Customs, and some by lesser services, it all depends on the job being applied for. You simply have a neighbor and the're undergoing a background check on him/her. Call the agent.

I did, meeting with Special Agent Gonzalez tomorrow.
This is all very secret squirrel. I could tell you more, but then I'd have to kill you.

When my next-door neighbor applied to join the CIA, the FBI came and asked us questions. He later became an astronaut and has flown on several missions, so guess we cleared him.

my old neighbor's son signed up for the military,a number of months later we had someone like that come knocking on our door.
i didnt know what to make of the guy or what he was up to.
But, he explained in very breif terms that the kid was appling for a postion.
the questions were something like: do you know so and so next door? has he ever caused you any problems? what do think of him?
That was about it.
I checked with the parents later and they confirmed the application for some unknown position.
Unrelated bad thing was the boy got killed in a car wreck about year later.
