Default AAA Member? Should I...

I got one of those standard "join pitch" through the mail yesterday and was thinking of doing it. Especially in light of driving my '65 from Vegas to Knott's in April and the type of service/coverage they offer is not available through my classic insurance. Who's had experience with them? For the $50 a year, seams like a good deal for a vintage car driver...

IIRC, with the platinum deal, it's only a few bucks more a year, and you get I think 100 miles free tow. I've not used that yet, but I've had the basic for many years, and love it. Whenever the kids' cars quit, or I broke the 'Stang at the track, or got stuck in the snow; make a call, get a tow. I went with Platinum because tow rates have gone up with fuel, and the after 3 miles then you pay was getting too pricey. I've never had to use it more than once or twice a year, though, so I don't know at what point their patience will wear thin.

There are limits to how often you can use it, but if you maintain your vehicles, it shouldn't be a problem.

If I maintained my vehicles, I wouldn't need it.

We bought a membership for a cross-country trip a few years ago and it more than paid for itself not only in tow service, free maps and even got us some hotel and campsite discounts. Don't have it now but was wishing I did a few weeks back when the wife's ignition was messed up.

Wouldn't do without it. I have the 100 mile tow as well.

I have the "Premier" menmbership. I definitely think it's worth it. This one allows you one tow up to 200 miles, three tows up to 100 miles each, and I think unlimited tows under seven miles each. Plus, you can get up to three gallons of gas if you run out on the road somewhere and free battery jump service whenever you need it. O n top of that, you get the other perks: discounts at hotels and restaurants. Discounts at some parks and attractions. They also offer some free DMV services.

I have been a AAA roadside member for years. The entire family is on the premium plan. BTW if you are new, you will have to sign up for the 1st year as a standard member which = 4 free tows up to 5 miles. But once you graduate premium you get 4 free tows up to 100 miles, I think. For my family that is 16 free tows a year.

Back when I restored Red, the family used their cards to tow Red to the body guy, to glass guy, back home, etc.

Shag came home from the body guy via AAA.

Besides all that, as noted above you can register your car, etc through your local AAA office.

They let you do that?

I tried to use AAA to have my friend's wrecked pickup towed to the local pull-n-save. They said their policies forbid towing to salvage yards.

That kind of upset me since if I ever total a car AAA won't help me get rid of it.

But other than that, great service. Well worth the price, especially for us classic drivers.

Saved my bacon lots of times....

I have the RV card and the whole family on it. This way they will also tow my trailers...

I will say the coverage was better in California than it is in Utah....

My vert has been on the AAA hook a couple of times. Wouldn't be without it.

From a towing perspective, AAA is one of the lowest payers in the industry. That means that, with the more professional companies, the AAA calls get a lower priority (i.e. you wait longer for them to arrive). Either that, or you get the lowballer who has POS equipment and little to no insurance.

None of that matters to the consumer until something goes wrong. Think about that...

Interesting information I've been with AAA for more years than many here have been driving and had few issue's. The one thing that seemed to drive me nuts is when travling out my state there coverages changed.

I don't use them for Insurance just road service so who do you recomend? In my case I need service to handle number of differnt type vechicles from 1 ton CC truck and 5th wheel to Show cars that must be on flatbeds with well qualified operators. To just everyday cars.

I had a different one once and i seemed to be good, but alas they went broke.

I had a friend that liked the Allstate plan.

In case of an accident I have towing with my insurance company and they have asked me about roadside. I declined since I have AAA. I may just check them out. (Liberty Mutual) I am sure that it is one that is used by multiple clients like LM.

I was bummed when I moved to Utah and found that I pay the same amount and get less coverage. Further the coverage I had in CA is not available here at all.

So, from a "towing" prospective, how about a list of companies that you think give the best for your side, best to worst?
