Default What's It Worth: Jeep 4.0 engine

Due to neglect (yes, me included), the wife's 2002 Jeep GC ran out of oil while on the highway, and now it's showing low oil pressure when hot. While it runs normally, it bothers me to see the pressure so low. So........

Local junk yard just got in an 04 GC front end hit with about 65K miles on it, and they're looking for $1250 for it. Is that in the ballpark? Fairly easy to change in the driveway, so I'm thinking used instead of remanned long block. I'm going to listen to it run tomorrow. Opinions?

John

Not too many miles from me I can buy an '04 engine with 39K miles on it for $850.
Check it out in your area-

I agree. $1250 is a bit high, and $850 is in the ballpark of prices I see for used engines.

The engines with similar miles are $1200 to $1400. the only engines below $1000 have 110K miles on one and the other doesn't show miles.

So it would seem that in your neck of the woods, $1250 IS in the ballpark.

It wouldn't surprise me if everything in CT is more expensive than in the south.

Wow, that's odd, that's the reverse of what I've been finding. I've been poking around to find a complete Chevy 6.0-4L80E combo for my dad's project, and I don't dare buy one in the midwest, as they want $1400 or so for the engine and trans and extra to sell it complete, whereas I can order a complete combo from Maine or Mass., have it shipped here and still save ~$400.

Taxes in CT are brutal, and many companies are packing up and moving out at a record rate. Peter Paul Candy (Cadbury), anchored in Naugatuck CT for 50 years, closed up and moved the entire company to (I believe) Virginia for cost of doing business reasons, and they're not alone. If our family wasn't anchored here in CT, I'da been gone years ago.

Anyway, I bought the motor this morning. 65K, heard it run, three month warranty. Thanks for the advice guys.
