Looks like i'll be going on a date very soon and I'd like to steer clear of dinner and a movie. I could make her dinner, which is better, but there's nothing very spectacular about my apartment.
I'm stuck in a town of 20,000 (90% of which is the students), restaurant choices are limited, and it gets down below 40 degrees at night. I have some very nice friends and I can borrow a CR-V or an S-10.
Money isn't extremely tight, so I wouldn't mind doing something that has a bill associated.
What kinds of unique date ideas have you guys used in the past?
Thanks
-Matt

We're in pullman, 90 miles south of Spokane, so Cour 'd lene is out of the option at the moment, at least until i get a car of my own.
Comedy's not a bad idea but i'm not 21. There's a weekly comedy show on campus, that's not a bad idea at all. Either that or a Dane Cook DVD or something I suppose.
She's already been to the apartment. Made fun of me for having no bed frame (mattress on floor) and no computer chair. I have a desk and a desktop computer, I sit on the computer tower to use it. Haha.
All the furniture was free and it shows. The couch is busted and the recliner has minimal padding left. As I said, nothing spectacular about the apartment. I have the 60" TV and a comfortable corner section of a sectional couch, along with my pioneer stereo system, and that's about all that's worth seeing.
Thanks
-Matt

Although I don't know your interests, staying at your apartment sounds boring. When I was your age I lived in San Francisco, there were many cheap & fun things to do. Scenic lookouts, parks/picnics, and hiking were a great way to get to know someone. Any live street music/bands?
Are there any artistic-type of places nearby? In my town, there are 2 places where you can make, decorate, and fire pottery. It's fun, creative, and interactive. Something like that could give you some insight into your date's personality. (Crazy will come out really quick.)
Comedian Adam Corolla's philosophy is women care more about 'labor hours' than anything else. It's more valuable to write a poem than to buy a card. It's more valuable to pick wildflowers and make an arrangement that to buy a some roses. Keeping that in mind, you should have some options.

Pottery sounds like a blast. I'm not sure if the school offers one-time night classes or not. They definitely have a floor in the art building for ceramics.
Plus I just discovered that the Snake River is only 10 miles away

If that is n't good enough, try a picnic in the woods around there. Take your favorite bubbley beverage, some cool finger sandwiches you made in a basket with some designer chips and a blanket. This may require some warmer weather though. Perhaps a thermos of hot cocoa made from milk, vanilla, sugar and cocoa powder not that instant crap. When you make the stuff yourself, they love it.
SWMBO enjoys a ride on the 4 wheeler and a picnic with homemade food items. You can dress it up with some Kalamata olives, cream cheese, celery and other finger food stuff. If you are unsure what to do about it, try going to a small trendy store in town and ask the ladies behind the counter for help. They will guide you to the right cheeses and other things. Could be romantic and fun for both of you.
We always lived by a rule, that if you were serious about a girl you would take her miniature golfing.

Oh, get some decent furniture at a thrift store for like $10 - MH

Whatever you do, don't do a movie or anything where you are not talking. That's the purpose of a date, to get to know one another. Movies are fine later on but in the beginning it's all about communication. Find something that will get you talking and interacting...that way you can get to some "interacting" later!

Wow, I've picked up some good tips if I ever give SWMBO the heave-ho.
Seriously, to be different try a hike & picnic, comedy club or the symphony (points for classing yourself up). Any planetarium's nearby? Also, scope out some garage sales to upgrade the sofa, recliner and bed frame. Keep the bathroom and kitchen clean.

Matt, I believe SAC69 is giving you good advice. Planetarium is a great idea. If you can get the projectionist to give you a night sky with some falling stars for a little while after the show .... you will be doing great. Another idea, look for colleges and universities near by and find out if they have a theater program, a music program, or a lecture series. Gives you something to talk about. Museums, partcularly art, are good ... I suggest you scope it out solo first so it looks like you have been there before. I remember a date at a local art museum with a modern glass exhibit and then we found a small coffee / sandwich shop nearby .... very little cost, but priceless. One more (for the summer season) is a fireworks display.
