Default 2011 Ford Mustang: Return of the *5.0*

New engines for 2011 mean the return of the return of the '5.0' badge:

- a 3.7-liter Duratec V-6 engine to replace the existing 4.0-liter unit in the base Mustang (despite the drop in displacement, power is supposed to go from 210 hp to 315 hp).

- the new 5.0 liter Coyote V8, rated at 400 hp, replacing the 4.6 liter in the Mustang GT.

- rumored twin-turbocharged, aluminum-block "Road Runner" version of the Coyote engine for the next GT500 rated as high as 600 hp.

I think Ford should go with cubic inches and not the 5.0 badge. My two cents.

Alert Time will tell

Makes me wonder just how much influence the camaro has to do with it. And wait the V6 will have more power than my GT. Guess I will now have to throw a Whipple on it. Which makes me wonder how much power the 5.0 will have with a Whipple on it. fd

I think they are making a mistake by not offering the eco-boost as their base engine.

Maybe they should make it in hybred too....

How about a plug in? Hehehehe

I want the GT500, but will probably only be able to afford the V6....

That's why the eco-boost engine would be perfect. Twin turbo V6 . . . mmmmm.

GN's are kick-butt with a single turbo, imagine twins.

I think the long term plan is a base V6 and then a v8/TTV6 combo at the same, higher price level. The TT will have the same power or more as the v8, so I can't see them selling it for 22k.

Yeah, but the Taurus SHO is base priced at $35k+ with the EcoBoost. It is not a low priced engine to put in a car so you would not be able to offer an inexpensive base priced Mustang if that was your base engine. Besides the new V-6 base engine will be making over 300hp.

I'm personally glad that Ford is bringing back old nameplates like the Taurus and the 5.0 engine. Good job Alan Mulally

All I know is that the new, non turbo V6 would be interesting to put in a classic, road course racer. Decent power, and should be light. Good mileage too.

Boss car in 2012? If it's a Boss 302 that they're gonna build, I might need to start saving my pennies now. I'm gonna want one!

How many of us are sitting here thinking "wonder if it will fit in my __ (insert 65/66/67/68 etc).

How cool would it be if Ford would design a new engine knowing it was also going to be retrofitted into older cars and thus deliberately support the retrofit option?
