For 52 years and three months, I managed to go through life without ever breaking a single bone in my body. Yesterday, that streak ended PAINFULLY at work. I was helping the gabage collector move our dumpster so he could pick it up and empty it. The thing was overflowing and really heavy. Then, yep, one of the wheels rolled over the toes on my right foot. I immediately felt like I was about to pass out and had to sit down. After a few minutes, when I regained some feeling in my foot, I was able to limp over and report the incident to my boss. She immediately sent to our designated occupational injury clinic. Three of my toes are completely purple, and the big toe is broken between the nail and the first joint. They burned a hole through the nail to help relieve pressure in case blood had gotten under there. I don't think it stopped bleeding all night. Late in the evening, I noticed the gauze they had wrapped on it was more and more bloody so I slipped an old sock on to try and not make a mess on the carpet if I got up for anything. Before going to bed, I noticed the sock was getting bloody, too, so I ended up wrapping my foot with a couple of plastic bags to keep my blankets clean. It doesn't hurt much now. I really thought it would be worse. If I don't touch it, all I really feel is the burning sensation from the swelling. They gave me some Vicodin and said it would help relieve the pain and make me drowsy. It didn't do either. I think the ice pack they gave me has helped the most. I can't wear a shoe on the right foot and can only limp around as long as I don't put any weight on my toes. Needless to say, I'll be out of work for at least a week. I could use the time off, but it's not much fun if I can't move around.
Sorry to hear about your foot. I've been really lucky getting as far as I have without breaking any bones. Don't want to start now either because it'll take me forever to heal. I've come close, tho, due to my choice of extra curricular activities. Had a concussion once from a bad mountain biking fall. Wouldn't wish that on anybody. Hope you feel better soon and your foot heals quickly.
