This is pretty much an urban legend:

snopes.com: Determining Product Origins by Bar Code

ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY--NO MATTER WHAT THE FRONT OF THE BOX... OR PACKAGE SAYS, TURN IT OVER AND READ THE BACK---CAREFULLY!

With all the food and pet products now coming from China , it is best to make sure you read label at the grocery store and especially Walmart when buying food products.

Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located.
It is important to read the bar code to track it's origin.
How to read Bar Codes .... interesting!
This may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you.
GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA & CANADA " AND NOT FROM CHINA!!

The whole world is concerned about China-made "black hearted goods".
Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.
471 is Made in Taiwan .
This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the
public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ", so they don't show from which country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode - remember if the first 3 digits are:

690-692 ... then it is MADE IN CHINA
00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA
30 - 37 FRANCE
40 - 44 GERMANY
471 ... Taiwan
49 ... JAPAN
50 ... UK

BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number.
We need every boost we can get! Pass this on to everybody on your E-Mail Contact List!!

If the government won't help us, we MUST help ourselves.

Amen

He probably meant www.madeinusa.com not .org.

No bashing there.

I also am willing to pay a little more for quality and to keep Americans making things.

But then, I guess I'm old school since I refuse to use the self checkout lines too. I kind of like the idea of seeing who's paycheck I'm contributing to.

If you are looking for American made tie down straps google Mac's tie downs. They are available at Summit racing. Pretty much anything you may need to tie down your car and great quality.

I've been making a real effort to buy whatever I can that is made in the USA.

As pointed out earlier in the thread, somewhat ironic that to buy "local" usually requires the web...

I just bought some jeans I found on this website: Still Made in USA.com - American-Made Products for Home and Family

From "All American Clothing". Seem to be high quality.

I also now own some made in Wisconsin "Wigwam Socks".

I am also looking to by higher value American Made products, my blast cabinet was made in the USA, I went with a Miller Welder, which I think is still made in the USA.

I will no longer walk into a Harbor Freight store or visit their website.

Don't get me started on Harbor Freight. I wanted a die grinder just to do a little weld cutting on the trailer I'm working on. So I go by there not wanting to be cheap but just don't use this kinda stuff that much. When checking out they tried to sell me an extended warranty and I said no thank you. Guess what, after about 1 hours worth of work this evening the thing don't work anymore. They will be seeing in the morn.

Paying more for quality, regardless where it is made is obviously a good investment. However, globalization is a wonderful thing. It is boosting our economy just as it is strengthening foreign economies. If importing all that "cheap crap" from Asia wasn't benefiting the US, you wouldn't see it here; yes, buying foreign DOES help the US economy.

But yes, some of it really is junk...
