I was wondering if there are any VMF'ers in the DC area that have experience with replacing the front frame rails. I am going to have to replace the front section of the drivers side rail on my 66 and was wondering if there was anyone that would be willing to give some pointers, and maybe some assistance if I get in a jam

Sorry I can't offer pointers. But if you give me enough lead time (so I can get SWMBO approval), I can offer some muscle and a digital camera for posterity.
I already have the posterity covered but thanks for the offer. You did give me a thought though. We (Mid Atlantic Region) should start having get togehters to tackle projects on members mustangs. I will even volunteer mine for the first project. Frame rail anyone? :p

Anyway, sounds like a great idea to me. Spring is coming and I'm sure we all have projects we'd like to get finished but require a second set of hands. Right now, I'd say your frrame rails are first on the list of the "MAC VMF Project List" (like how I just came up with that off the top of my head?).
I'll make a new post and maybe our esteemed moderator can give us a hand in making it a sticky post.
Shoot me an email when you pick a date Rob. I'll make every effort to be there with camera and wrench in hand.....and an open mind to learn how a frame rail is replaced.
I never changed part of a rail before, I replaced the entire front clip. I would be willing to sit by the computer for you but it is quite a ways for me to get there. Or if you PM me I'll send my phone number and try to talk you through.

Thats a good idea. When the garage is built and I get my T5 transmission I will invite you all over to my place. I have no idea how to change a transmission and correctly set everything up when the new trans is in and would love some help. Free beer...I don't drink (Im only 17 anyway) and food. ::
I've changed the clutch in a 240z, had to remove the tranny and realign it, but never in a stang...but I'm not too far you and would be more than happy to lend a hand...
You are a little far from me, but I swapped a T5-Z into my '70 Cougar, replacing the FMX tranny, and would be happy to talk you through it. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help.
I'm in Frederick, MD and about to attempt the same thing. Everything I have read says as long as you have the front suspension off so there is no load, practice good metal prep and measure often, you should be fine. I am by no means a professional welder, but do okay with a 110VAC wire feed MIG. I will be using an export brace as well to help make sure everything stays aligned. I'll also use a couple of plub-bob's along the front, from the top where the core support would be, to the bottom where the front frame support is, do keep everything aligned. I plan to go slow, measure, measure again and pray. I'm told this is the only way to do it.
I am also just doing a front frame section -the front 19" on each side, rtaher than a whole rail replacement. Email me if you think maybe teaming up for the task is worthwhile.
I am doing the front 30" on the drivers side. I picked it up from VA Mustang a couple weekends ago, just have to find time to do it. I am going to install the export brace as well, plus am thinking about cross bracing the fender apron from the radiator core support to the cowl to make sure that everything stays square. I have a friend that is doing the welding for me since I have NO welding experience. I will post when I am going to do it, so if anyone wants to join in on the fun, they are more than welcome. Will probably be sometime later in Feb before I get the time to do it though ::

I'm open every Saturday in Feb (except the 7th). I signed up for Sundays at work (shorter hours and fewer calls). Keep us posted on the date. I'll have a surprise for those that attend.
Sounds like you have covered most of the bases. Your welcome to send me an email at curt.bossaller@adelphia.net if you want to team up. Hopefully I'll be doing mine in the next couple of weeks as well.
thanks
