I'm taking an engine and transmission out of a 1991 thunderbird to put in my 66 convert. The trans is an AOD. I have a 9" rear end out of a 57 Ford. What do I need to do to use the driveshaft out of the thunderbird?
Measure the length you need, realize the t bird shaft won't bolt in, get it cut, balanced by a GOOD driveshaft/u-joint shop, and have them put on the correct yoke with correct teeth, and the rear u joint setup.
Doable.. might be pricey, but isn't all of it?
Another option if the fit is close, is to change the yoke out for a shorter/longer one. The factory '66 and the donor car yokes did not fit my application.
I used an aod from a '88 T-Bird and had a few random yokes laying around that I use to plug the tail shaft when removing/installing a transmission. I lucked into one that fit perfect with my factory HiPo drive shaft and 9" rear. New u-joints and I was in business.
I used a similar driveshaft from a police Crown Vic. As pointed about above, once these types of driveshaft are shortened and balanced they work very well.
