I want install an emergency warning switch as it appears the car had one at some point (All wires, flasher module, and connections are in place. Heck, even the back of the old switch is still there.) I'm wanting to use something like this

The question I have is this: There are 4 wires that go to the original switch and this aftermarket switch only has 3 connectors. Is it possible to use this switch? If you've done it and can tell me which wires go where, that'd be great. TIA.

Brian

If it matters, its a 1966 coupe, nothing fancy.

Alright, looks like no one has used this switch. Anyone use anything other than the original emergency flasher switch?

The factory switch was nothing special. As long as you wire it up correctly I don't see a problem using a switch like that. Do you have a car wire diagram?

Yeah, I have a wiring diagram, but just not sure what wires should go where. I have three connectors on the new switch: power, load, and ground. There were 4 going to the old switch: one to the fuse (through the flasher module) and three to the main wiring harness (to the signal switch and out to the lights.). Guess I was just trying to find someone who had done it before to help confirm what wires would connect where. I can probably figure it out through trial and error though.

If I remember correctly, One pin is power in from the flasher. Then one is power out to the brake lights which ties into the harness around the turn signal switch plug. The other two pins have power out to the left and right front signals which also go thru the turn signal switch. Pretty straight forward if you use a meter to check the pins and the harness with.

Yeah, I got where the wires go. I guess I was just wanting to confirm or bounce the idea off someone. I'm going to try hooking the wire from the flasher module to the power connector and the other 3 to the load connector. I can always run a ground wire to the dash.

Alright, need help. I've tried wiring in this switch myself and after several attempts, I'm at my wits end. First off my wire colors do not match up correctly with the wiring diagram, but I figured out which ones to substitute in their place. I connected the wire from the flasher to the power connector on the switch. Then I took the other wires (out to the front turn signal lights and the brake lights), connected them using a wire nut temporarily and ran a wire from them to the load connector on the switch. Then grounded it using a wire from the dash to the ground connector.

That worked kinda. It did cause all four lights to flash, but very quickly. So quickly in fact that the bulbs didn't have time to get to full brightness. Also, it caused the turn signals to act the same way when individually activated. Also, when I stepped on the brake pedal, the front parking lights activated. I don't know how else to wire this thing. I'm guessing that's why the origianal ememgency switch had four connectors. Any electrical guys that can help? Or maybe someone else has done this since I first posted this. Thanks in advance.

That's because with this switch there is no way to isolate the lamps from front to rear and left to right, so when you step on the brake the front lamps glow and when you turn a turn signal on all the lights will flash. You need a switch with the same characteristics as your original switch. Probably the best option would be to use this switch with a 3PST Relay.

Well, I've done what I probably should have done in the first place. I picked up an original emergency flasher switch off ebay. Thanks for all the help.
