I have a 4160 Holley carb (600cfm/elect choke)that I plan to put on my 72 Mach 1 after the rebuilt engine goes in. I have had the carb since it was new, but it is a bit crusty and needs a rebuild.
My question is, will ChemDip remove the gold/green coloring of the Holley carb body and bowls? How about ChemDip removing plating from items like the choke plate? I like the original appearance of a Holley and don't want that to go away, any tips on cleaning the carb to retain the gold/green color?
Second question, is a secondary diaphram a recommended replacement or do they rarely go bad? They aren't included in the kit, so I kind of thought they don't go bad very often.

I dunno, I can't get mine to remove much of anything. I bought a couple of cans of parts store stuff because the long disused "pro" can at work has become extraordinarily foul. I dumped my 4180 Holley in the stuff four days ago. It looks vaguely cleaner, I've been checking it every night. It hasn't even softened the metering plate gasket. This one doesn't have that greenish plating but I seem to recall the last one came through with green color intact. I am NOT positive about this though.
The stuff we have at work is completely foul and black but strips about anything. We're fairly sure it will eat fingers off too. No one seems to know exactly how old it is but no doubt it's enviromentally very incorrect. If it were to be changed for fresh stuff I suspect it would be for the same wimpy cat pee I'm currently trying to get use out of. The cans are what really get me, no way can you jam the body of any four barrel I'm aware of into their can. Good for lawnmower and motorcycle carbs I guess. I bought two can and a big stainless steel cooking pot with a lid.

I just bought a 5gl bucket of this stuff. Only did one carb over night. It cleans very well. It will eat up plastic parts. The carb must be completely taken apart. On the carb i did last night (that was my first and only) It still has the finish you want to keep. I have only done this once, but i think it will keep that classic look.
Nope. I went and looked. I have "Gunk/Solder Seal Carburetor and parts cleaner". At the bottom of the label it proclaims "Environmentally Friendly". If I had seen that, I wouldn't have wasted my money. Shoulda just stuck with the horrible (REAL carb cleaner) stuff at work.
And I can confidentally say this stuff wouldn't remove a Holley's plating. Because it's not removing any damn thing else either. "Chem-Dip" it is NOT.
