I think the 67-68 tail light panel is MUCH cleaner with the inset lights (vs the sticking out lights of 64.5-66). I hope I don't upset anyone by asking this, but has anyone ever welded in a panel from a 67/68 in a 65-66? Then used the 67/68 tail lights? I don't really want a Frankenstein Mustang, but damn they look better.
Thoughts, opinions, PICS?

There was a short thread about this on StangNet not too long ago IIRC. I think the panel's wider, which would require some doing since the filler hole is in the middle (so you can't just take some out of the middle). Also everybody jumped down his throat.

Might be a cool custom touch, it is your car right?

Go for it, if you don't like it, convert it back. Not much cost involved, just a lot of work.

Those panels have to be welded in, right? I know they have a concave shape to them, vs the 66 FLAT piece. Those panels are cheap though, huh?

I say go for it! Taillight panels aren't THAT expensive, so worst case scenario is you know it won't work the way you wanted it to.

I've seen this done before, I wasn't impressed.
But, I also prefer the 65-66 tail lights so your thoughts could very well be different.

67-68 cars come standard with those recessed panels. Why not start with one of those cars?

:p

I agree with you. Years ago, I saw a picture of a pre-production fastback that had larger tail lights, similar to the 67. Absolutely transformed the car. I wish Ford went with this updated look for the fastback instead of sticking to the orignal design. I'm not sure if it used a larger panel, or if the light bezels were sectioned, and part of it was on the trunk lid.

I know it's hard to just get a different car, I also know a little about making what you have into what you want. I won't try to discourage you but you should spend some time looking at the two close up. The 67/68 tail light panel may be the easy part. The trunk lip is quite different and so are the end caps. You may consider the Shelby style lights if you want a change. I know they don't offer the style of the 67/68 but it would be much easier and cheaper. Anyway, if your good at metal work I say go for it! And post pics too if you do it!
