Default exhaust?

Ok so i got motor built and ready to go in. The only thing i am missing is headers. Since i am running the canfield heads with raised and large ports hedman wants $800 to build a custom set of headers to fit and well that is not in the budget. lol So what are some of you guys running?? I need atleast a 1 3/4" primarys and i dont care if they are shortys, try y's, or long tubes I can make the rest of the system myself. or if anybody has a set of headers that are wanting to get rid that fit my needs. The largest i can find off anybodys web page that are in the $400 and under range are all 1 5/8" primary max. any help is apperciated

$800 is close to par for a "good" set of coated, 1 3/4" headers. I ran into the same problem.

Yeah, that's a lot for an uncoated. The Hooker 6208-1 are a great choice, but you're still talking just under $800. You can get the 6208, which are uncoated for closer to $500, and both of these are a good quality tuned, full length header.

Dougs Headers make some mid lengths in the $450 area for uncoated, and around $600 for coated.

I run hooker supercomps but tri-y's work excellent in street app's up to 6K. IMHO, given the price structures that many are charging, I would contact Hooker who through Summitt and other distributors sells u-build it yourself header kits. If you have good basic welding skills you can build a set of headers for a fraction of the price that fit better than anything you can buy and then have them ceramic coated.

You dont need custom headers for Canfield heads. The exhaust ports are raised .400" but the headers are only effective raised .200"...if less than a quarter inch screws up how your headers fit then you have larger issues. Hooker Super Comps would be a good way to go; they have near equal length tubes and a decent collector. Painted versions of the Super Comps go for $450.

Yep, same thing with my TW heads. I didn't change a thing with the new heads. It all bolted right back up. Those are the 6208s I was talking about. Just a touch over $500.

Couple points. I would not suggest using a new set of coated headers when breaking in a new engine. The header folks will tell you it will damage (ruin) the coating due to extreme heat and not be warrantied. Get a set of painted to break it in and have them coated later.

I like the "build your own" idea. You don't really have to be an expert welder either. Piece it together for a custom fit and hold it all in place with tack welds. You can always take it to a better welder to finish 'em up.

That set of Patriots is not going to be larger than 1 5/8".

You're not going to find what you're looking for under $400. I run Accufab headers. http://www.accufabracing.com My headers have 1 3/4" primaries. They're made for the aftermarket raised port heads. They come uncoated. They ran me about $600. I welded the 3 bolt collector flanges on myself. Also, if you're running a roller cam, you don't have to worry about ruining the coating on headers. You don't need to run the engine at 2,000 rpm for a roller cam like you do on a flat tappet cam.

Prior to coating

Headmen suggests that when the ceramics are first run to have another external fan blowing into the engine bay to assist in cooling. I know that at night my headers glowed red at first and my engine had been run in for 45 minutes at RPM's prior to it being shipped to me (crate turn key). So heat is going to be an issue at first. I am not even sure why I am just a novice passing on what little I know.
