Default Power adder for 289

I have a restomod 68 mustang and I started first on the engine six years ago. I have since added new trans, 9inch, disc brakes, interior job and a viper blue paint job. I have a 289 which has been bored .30 over forged internals, rpm air gap intake, Holley 4bbl, ported &polished & heads, trimmed deck, headers and what not but I want more power but I don't know what to do New stroked short block , new heads, Paxton supercharger, holley blower, nitrous.... I need some help deciding from people who have done this already what you would do and if you could do it again what you would have done
Thank you for the help- Hookedup12

What cam do you have?

Intake and carb sound good and the heads have been worked, so it sounds like a cam upgrade should be the next step.

Tim I have a pbm cam an on the cam card it says it has a 498 lift. So I'm not sure what else to do but that would have been a great next step!!

I also thought about stroking the 289 since its already bored out but would that be too much for the stock block. I'd hate to shoot a rod through it

Since it sounds like you already have a stout little shortblock built I would do some research on a blower..I have a couple of buddies running 289s with edelbrock rpm heads and the little weiand roots style blowers...They work very well..

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing but would I have too much compression for that? An I know I'd need a blower cam but would I need anything else?

Then again after I bought the charger kit, dish pistons, blower cam and new carb I could have built a strong 347 roller motor with afr heads

it would seem like a waste to me to redo the bottom end for a stroker if you already have properly built the shortblock (you mentioned forged internals).

based on your limited lift cam, i'm guessing you have factory heads.

i think you need to put a good cylinder head on it with a bigger cam. i would think your forged pistons would have a good valve relief in them so hopefully you won't have to rework the pistons. did you go zero balance on the crank?

Here would be my pick. Keep boost level down according to short block capability and have a blast with it. I am running a stock shortblock with z304 heads with a 9-1 compression. Kept boost level to around 11-12 and I is probably one of the best cars I have build over the years. It is a blast to drive.

More than likely on the crank I had a great machine shop do all the work but it's been so long I can't remember... But say I was too go with some afr heads what would be best 165 or 185 and what cam would work good It would be good to go ahead and get a really nice set of heads like afrs anyway because if I switch to a 347 on down the road I can still use those heads so I like that idea...

I'm still between heads and cam combo & a supercharger kit.... Hmm decisions, decisions. I like the price of heads and cam but would that be enough hp for the dollar and the same for the charger.. I mean I know I would get more hp from the charger but would it be worth the money to get that.

how much compression are you running? personally I really love my paxton supercharger. first you have the cool factor of something the average guy can see when you pop the hood, second you get a really significant boost in horsepower. third it is an easy install and fourth unless you are using the boost which does not really kick in until about 2750 rpm you still have a nice relatively mild engine so streetability and gas mileage are unchanged. to me it is the best of all worlds. the only downside is the money. I bought the polished version in 2003 and it was right at 3000.00 if I remember right. but it was well worth it imho. it is designed for stock compression. I have the aluminum edelbrock heads and about 9.5:1 compression and it has been very reliable for me.
