I'm prepping for the body work, which I hope to start this winter and have completed by spring/summer. I'm having such a hard time picking a color or even which direction to go in. I have always loved the GT350 clones. If I had a fast back I would be doing that with out question. I have a coupe and a fast back is not in the cards. I have stripes now but its never been right with the badges and chrome etc. I think if I go 350 I need to do it well. If I stay stock, I need to stay stock. So I've come back to the idea of a 350c coupe.
My goal with the build of my budget hot rod mustang has always been to equal or out spec a '66 Shelby with power, safety, over all performance, etc. I'm not quite there yet but I'm getting closer and ill have more 'performance' in my mustang when I'm done than a '66 Shelby. So now, I'm struggling with the paint/color scheme. I need help. I think I'm sick. What is the cure? If I out spec a Shelby, would it be right or wrong to do the coupe as a Clone?
Any one have pictures? Thoughts? Suggestions? My wife says go for it. I am only going to do this once so I want to be sure I do it right. How bad could it be?
I may be a little biased, but since my car was originally Ivy Green, that's the way I went with my Shelby restomod coupe. Ivy Green was one of the colors available on the '66 Shelbys, so after I found a tiny bit of exposed Ivy Green on my car ( in the trunk ) during disassembly I fell in love with it and pulled the trigger.
Good luck with your project! Sounds like you're in the same place I was a long time ago.

Go for it! The Shelby look on a coupe is great.
Besides, it sounds like if you don't, you'll never be happy.

A Coupe is along the lines of the Shelby Black Hornet is a pretty amazing looking car. It's a Shelby style Mustang, black with a black vinyl hardtop and it's Gorgeous!
If you Google Shelby Black Hornet, you can find some info on it.
I like it. Enjoy your car, they were meant to be driven. Someday.....I will finish mine as a 1966 SCCA tribute....it is an original K-Coupe (Dad bought brand new) and I won't CUT anything, but temporary changes are wide open for me. I say make it yours!
thanks for the support guys. I'm still playing with ideas. I was thinking tonight about the flat hot rod black with gloss black shelby stripes and rocker stripes with the GT350C in gloss black as well. I think that could be pretty cool. I'm having a real hard time with this. Mostly cause I only want to paint the car once.
Love that green with the stripes.
Now back to the shelby theme. I need a scoop for the hood. I think the bolt on would be fine. Was the racing apron a shelby thing or a racing thing? I like them but if I go shelby clone/tribute I want to be close to the rear deal if I can. Same question for the side scoops. I think in the case of the scoopes and the hood scoop they would be looks only and non functional. Still if shelby did it, I think I would.
I have a very strong opionion but Ivy Green is one very nice and perfect color. The r style front end not only looks better ( in my opinion) but aids cooling. Side scoops help braking but can't be used on a convertible.
Have you given any thought to a Group 2 car? Shelby raced these with much success. They were coupes with full interiors (as per the rules) and then had all the cool Shelby mods. I am personally not into making cars that never existed but the Group 2 cars did exist and looked super cool. One other thing to think about...the color. I know that Flat/gloss black looks cool now, if you only want to paint it once will you get tired of the flat black? If you paint it with no stripes for now, you can put stripes on it later, like in 5 years and have a different look without too much work.

I know this is an older thread but I was surfing and read this and liked the topic.
Coupes don't get a lot of respect. I actually like them as much if not more than the Fastback. It is tricky to do a coupe tastefully when trying to make a car that "didn't exist"
I built my 67 originally as a "clone" or "tribute" to the prototype Little Red and in part the Green Hornet (later remade as the Black Hornet). There were also some Mexican Shelby coupes in 67. I have always loved Mustangs and of course Shelby's and realized I could never afford a real Shelby. If I had one I would probably sell it anyway because I drive my car a lot and wouldn't risk damaging or having stolen a real Shelby. I have had this coupe over 23 years now.
Anyway, when the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds came out, I fell in love the Eleanor style and changed up my Little Red concept to what I call the "Super Coupe" and even thought of doing a stripe with GT/SC, kind of a play on the GT/CS but flipping the letters for Super Coupe instead of California Special.
I know some will not like my car but I have driven it to the 45th anniversary, on 3 Power Tours in 14 different states and so many other places and I get a lot of comments about how my car is one of the best looking coupes. I know it is all a matter of opinion but I do like how it turned out and so do other people it appears. So good luck with your 350C and share with us how it turns out!

Something like this......

I would not do it. I think LeMans stripes only are OK (but are overdone), but GT350 graphics on a coupe is over the top, including ones that say stuff other than "GT350". Actually especially those. Sorry to be so opinionated about this, but my opinion is that if you're building a GT350 clone it should be a fastback and should be true to the original, not just graphics on a red car with an engine that has those ugly Ford Racing valve covers and a K&N, and a console with cup holders in a non-black interior.
