Default 1967 Fastback Finned Tail Light Panel

Just sharing an experience: I purchased a repro aluminum finned tail light panel from Mustangs Unlimited. It cost $259 plus the trip to Ca.

1) Both panels needed a ton of material removed to clear the quarter panel extensions.

2)
The inner bottom corner of the right side panel interfered with the gas cap. I clearanced it, but a lot had to be removed in order to maintain the shape of the curve. You basically have to reshape the curve.

3)
The space between the inner end of left panel and the gas cap was greater than the right side. There is no way to "add" material to the left side and trimming the right side to match is just retarded.

At this point I just stopped what I was doing and threw both panels across my yard.
It was a costly mistake. Just a worthless product. v

Don't buy the product.

Jason, too bad you had to suffer that expense. I got mine out of a wrecking yard decades ago and then when I found out that they were being reproduced I was kinda bummed thinking now anyone can put them on their car. You don't see them that much, and now that we know they don't fit , the originals will be worth that much more. You have an absolutely beautiful car, have you thought about painting the tail light section satin black? Or were you thinking about painting the finned sections body color?

that's too bad I like those ribbed panels. I started to get one at one time, but decided to save the time, money and trouble so I just painted my stock panel black instead.

That is awful to spend that kind of money and have it not fit. I would have been calling and complaining.

Just keep your eyes out for original....I paid sub $300 for mine (it had 2 of the pop metal stubs broken off but I just bolted it on with a phillips headed bolt and painted the bolt black )

If you look close you can see even when new...they weren't perfect....but it did at least fit (and you can see my unbolted replacement bolt in the lower driver side below the tail light)

thanks for the pic dodgestang.

i think i may wind up buying another set of the 6 light bezels and powdercoating those black and then adding a vinyl wrap to the back panel. that way if i get sick of the look i can put it back to stock with minimal effort.
