hey guys im building a 65 fastback with a rod and custom front end and was wondering whats the widest i can go. im looking to do a 18inch rim up front but not sure how wide i can go. im going to be lowered on coilovers. any help would be great the fenders are stock right now but will probably get rolled
If you read the instructions, I think R&C say 4.5" BS is needed. I called and asked about other sizes and they really hadn't tried other wheel combos on their suspensions. I asked about going with 16 or 17 inch wheels, and again, they had nothing to offer.
I wish there were some R&C suspensions on Dodgestangs fitment chart.

I ran 17 X 8 Ford Bullitt wheels (5.72 backspace) with my Heidts, with 1" spacers and it was just about right. I ran 225/45 17 tires. I rolled the fenders and was VERY careful approaching driveways at an angle (I did catch the fender once - not pretty).
Before I had tried some 06 GT wheels (6.75 backspace) with 235/55 17 tires (original on 05-10 GTs) and the tires were too tall - they caught the front of the fenders when turning. I'm thinking you'll need a REAL low profile tire on an 18" wheel to work on the front of a 65/66. I think 17 X 8 with a 225/45 17 tire is about as large as you can safely go if you plan to drive it, though you might get by with a 245/45 tire.

I had that setup in a 65 fastback. I had torque thrust 2's from mustangs plus in 17x 8 with 4.75 backspacing. 235/45/17 rubber and they fit perfectly with no rubbing lock to lock. No spacers required.
Btw 17's already have a very short sidewall with a 235/45 tire which was the largest that would work without rubbing in front ( 245/45 rubbed). An 18 inch wheel will require an even shorter sidewall ( may look like a rubberband stretched on the wheel to keep from rubbing)..... you may want to reconsider a 17 inch.... so you don't look like a hoopty mobile
Also the shorter the sidewall the rougher the ride and it is a not subtle difference.
65/66 cars have very small wheelwells compared to 67 up cars and you have to be very careful with wheel/ tire combos or you may rub and mess up your paint. (ask me how I know)
thanks guys.. but im doing 18/19s im building a full custom pro touring car with a 03 supercharged cobra motor, custom interior etcetc. rear is mini tubbed and doing 295-30-19 and the wheels are going to be custom made for my setup but need a start on where to start looking on backspace for the front

Sounds like a cool project. I was able to fit (just barely) 18x8 with a 245/35 tire up front on my 65 Falcon (TCI suspension) so I would think you could do at least that on a Mustang since the Falcons have no room for tire. I have a very low ride height as well, but everything tucks up nicely without any clearance issues even at full lock. Mock-up and lots of measuring is key to cramming the most tire possible. And, BTW, the 18's look killer and do not look like "rubberbands." It is all about the ride height, the larger the rim the lower the car has to be to make it look "right."
Check out Pro-touring.com, lots of good info over there. Here is a link to my build.
Since you are going that far into this project, why not open up the wheel wells ever so slightly? I'm not talking about just cutting off the edge of the opening, but surgically open it up by removing metal above the flare and adding to the flare where it expands.
Done just enough to fit your wheels and not too much, one might never be able to notice it was done.

Simply Google Wheel Backspacing. Much easier then telling you, not trying to be a smart***
