Default Electric Trans output to Mechanical Speedo?

Does any one know if there is a device that will take the electric impulses from an electric speed output (from an SN95 T-5 specifically) and convert it to a mechanical input to run an original speedometer? I know that I should be able to pop out the electronics from the transmission and run a standard cable, but I am really looking to avoid that. Not a big fan of the speedo cable (burned a couple).

Thanks,
Chuck

After much more digging, I found this: Abbott Cable-X. They are sold through eBay by tachman1 for $280. Then, I found this thread from a guy trying to install it in an older Ford Ranger. Not real impressed with the unit as a whole and makes using a cable seem like a more attractive option.

Does anyone know of an alternative to this?

Thanks,
Chuck

Autometer sell Speedo's that run of electric output. That said they run nearly $100 more than a cable driven one. Thats the last piece I am waiting on for my new cluster...10 day back order of the speedo...bleh!

In addition to Autometer, Classic Instruments and Speedhut sell electric speedometers. I prefer the Classic Instruments to Autometer, I think they are a better quality instrument.

I was trying to avoid getting a new set of gauges, solely for the cost. I would LOVE a new set, but just can't afford it now. I like the SpeedHut gauges for their appearance and configurability.

What I am now investigating is using the gauges from the donor 94. They look like they will require me to make some mounts, but I believe with some work and ingenuity, it can be done. If I ever finish it, I'll happily post pictures and how to.

Buening, that's just a pulse generator/converter. It will not drive a mechanical speedo cable. That SN74 is generally used when you have an electric speedo and VSS that don't use the same pulse count, or need an aux output for another VSS based signal, like speed control.

I always wondered how that worked!

This one has been in the works forever (I found the page in mid 2009), but might be something to call/email and ask about.

Wheelsup351, I had already found that product (see the second post of this thread). Here's the thread I found describing one man's difficulties in installing this in a Ford Ranger. His experiences are voiced elsewhere, mostly on Chevy forums. The system is far worse than a simple speedo cable would be. It has all of the same drawbacks (plus a steep price, weak/noisy motor) and no real advantage.

Thanks for the info. Their page is rather sparse on information. For the price, though, I could have SpeedHut (or someone else who does custom gauges) make a 5" electric speedo that looks like the original 69 gauge.
