I have to agree with Don. Those 4 bangers are good for around 100,000 clicks, then overhauled. My old '92 blew up at 101 and change. To get into specifics it could be as simple as the oil pump gone bad with the result being what you have now. An early rebuild.

Drop the pan, check the pump. Sounds to me like it may have been an intermittant problem either sucking or pushing oil, then finally failed altogether. I always say check the cheep solutions first. Look at the pump and pick-up, replace if nessesary, then check again. If that doesn't do it, pull the whole thing out and tear into it.

Well it turned out to be a clogged oil filter that was robbing the top end of oil. She is all better now with no damage.
