'66 Mustang budget Autocross build called 'Venus'

This project has been stalled for the last year or so but now it is nearing completion. Like many projects on a budget, things progress slowly. It is owned by our Marketing Manager Ben Bryce and was used to design our Triangulated 4-Link. Ben has owned the car for roughly 15 years and primarily just cruiesd it on weekends. Ben has absolutely zero experience autocrossing but is ready to get behind the wheel after watching the rest of the guys have their turn.


Here is what it looked like 3 years ago when it came into the shop.

The stock 8" rearend getting freshened up. He used the bolt-on 4-Link brackets that come with the kit.



Once we were finished designing the Triangulated 4-Link all the pre-production parts were removed in favor of powdercoated production pieces. (No brakes just yet)










Installation of our Custom IFS.









Can't have an Autocross car without good brakes so the budget was balanced accordingly




Unfortunately, Ben had to dip into the engine build money to do the big brakes so all he did here was a basic refresh.



Ben lucked out when Magnaflow showed interest in building a production exhaust for the car.












More budget pieces. Through extensive research and test fitting Ben decided on running late model(2010+) Mustang wheels. He paid $200 for all four and the front back space is perfect. However, he had to run 1" spacers in the back. He is happy that he can rotate them though.

The car is drivable under its own power but he still has a few small bugs to work out with the engine. We will be scaling and aligning it tomorrow. Sal will tune at some point this week but I doubt it will see any actual dyno time.













Track tests will begin very soon.

interesting exercise. I dont see any sub-frame connectors or did I miss them.
I wish i had a friend named Magnaflow

Exactly which "late model" itteration are the wheels from?

Exactly which "late model" itteration are the wheels from?

You are correct, there are no subframe connectors on the car. Wasn't a conscious decision to exclude them just haven't got around to it yet.

The wheels are from the 2010+ model GT.

Got her all cleaned up yesterday and took a couple pics.

Is that actual ride height in the photos? Doesn't seem like there is much room to turn the tires with wheel travel but it might just be the way it looks.

I'm not even that low and I rub. Trying to decide what to do to solve it. Do those tires rub?

The guys in the shop aligned/scaled it yesterday. The lower control arms were angled up slightly ^^in those pics so we made a few turns on the coil-overs which brought it up about a 1/2 inch.

Are you allowing for full bump with the wheels locked? It still seems tight to me but I could be wrong.

It's definitely tight but that's how Ben likes it.

On a serious note, they will still rub at full compression/lock. He's got a bunch of tire on the front of that car at that height so he'll just have to raise it if it ever became an issue. The crazy thing is he could actually get away with another 1/4" of backspace. Pretty tough to find a 8" wheel with 6" of backspace though, especially on a budget.
