Default Hit the 1/8 again....

Ok I hit the 1/8 mile again after new spintech mufflers and mechanical advance distributor.

I spin good off the line with 235/60/14 BFG's

60' ------2.189
330'------5.94
ET--------9.05
mph-------78.75

So what is the first thing you would do to get this ET down!

I raced a 1969 SuperBee with a 440 and cam and he beat me by .02 seconds I had him down the whole track until he started picking up big time on the top end and his mph was 85 mine was 78 haha.

I also raced a 2003 Bullit Mustang with 4.10 gears, headers, tune, etc... and I beat him 9.07 to 9.27

It was a nice crisp night at about 65. I think I am just a minor tweak away from 8's (obviously tires would help alot)

A set of drag radials would help you get there for sure.

PRACTICE! You really want to get that 60' at 2 seconds flat (or below if you possibly can). That would show that you have proper control over the car/engine/tires at launch. This alone should get you to where you want to be without having to spend any money or tweak on anything else.

Tires for sure. What is your initial and total timing?

If you can easily change your mechanical advance, you could probably go faster w/o so much total. I would shoot for 14 and 34 on timing. Throttle response and low end will be better with more initial.

I went with some friends to North Star when I was in DFW in late July. It seemed like a nice and laid back track.

Sticky tires are absolutely the best thing you can do.

You can try varioUs launch techniques with your C4. Foot braking and playing with the rpm.
Also your rpm shift points can make a differance
At what rpm does your combo nose over?

Paint your traction bars black and shave .02 seconds...lol

Whats the measurement of your traction bar snubber to the leaf srprings?

I shift it around 6k. I tried launching it when I footbrake but it didn't seem as strong. I made peak power on the dyno at 5800.

I put the yellow lakewoods on because they are so easy to remove and paint if I want but they are vintage looking in yellow to match my 14'' cragers, etc...

I did find out that I have had a blown head gasket and I had it when I raced. I am not sure how much that affects performance but I have had a slight miss in the car the past several months and it runs hot on the highway. Once I get that fixed I am considering a good dyno tune where they can play with jets and timing. Then I figure if I can hit 8.90 with these 235/60/14 BFG's I could see mid 8's or better with slicks and good driving.

ALso, a 3000 converter wouldn't hurt but since I run such high rpm on the highway it might cause things to run hot again...

Hi,

Try shifting earlier, say 5600, by the time you pull the stick you're close to 5800. You want that thing to be in the peak torque band all the way down the track. A 1/8 track is short, you don't need to rev the snot out of it. How much does it weigh? My 65 Comet is ~3000 with me in it, it has done 7.80 in the 1/8, with a smaller carb and a similar package. My best 60 foot time is 1.71, with 4.56 gears, traction bars and ET DOT drag tires. Start a spreadsheet and keep track of changes, times, temperature, BP, etc. Altitude Density makes a big difference in these cars, here in New Hampshire, the track is at 90 feet - I have run as high as 1843 and a low as -936 feet, on that same track. Have fun!

Thanks for the advice John I will be keeping it in mind for sure! I do need to keep a log book with timesheets and combos.

Now I have discovered a blown head gasket or possibly cracked heads that have been causing an overheating on the highway problem I have had for months. It seems the car will go under the knife once again...

That sounds like you have a great combo and are a good driver running a 7.80. My car is about 3100lbs but I am using a 4.11 and SMALL 235/60/14 bfg radial ta tires. They are far from ideal and it shows in my 2.17 60'. I am amazed at what a good 60' can produce. Just going from a 2.24 to a 2.17 has brought me from a 9.17 to a 9.05 or so.

Hi,

I'm not sure it's the driver, only one shift in an 1/8 mile. Mostly physics, the Comet has a longer back half, it's always been a popular drag car. There's a big battery out back and a stock steel bumper (fiberglass up front). Do you have sub-frame connectors? I've got a full roll cage which keeps that thing stiff.

Get the head gasket fixed and go at it again. We are done for the season here in the northeast.

Check out these Comets!

Thanks John. I do have sub frame connectors. They were a great improvement.

I am taking my heads to be checked at machine shop today. One is either cracked or the gasket is messed up (gasket looks fine) because I tested positive for head gasket leak and have one valve that is green/clean and the others are brown.

Maybe some AFR 185's...or Trick Flow Twisted Wedge in the near future...
