Original equipment or not

I'm new to this board and this restoration. I have just started a 66 coupe w/289. Is there a way to tell what equipment came factory on the car. It has an A/C and disc brakes now but I'm not sure if this was available from the factory. I've checked the VIN # but not sure about options for the car.

Thanks for any help or ideas

There is no factory information for 1966 cars. You have a door tag and a buck tag , ,on the car that can help. Other than that, it's up to you to figure out.

You can post some pics, that may help figure it out, as mentioned there is no solid database for the 1966 cars to pull from like the later cars.

Sometimes you can tell if stuff has been added by previous owners by looking at the installation to see if it was done at the factory or at a later date. Things like holes in sheet metal drilled instead of punched, complementary equipment missing, etc.

In the case of A/C, you should see tinted glass throughout, punched holes in the firewall for the hoses, proper wiring harnesses and connectors, punched evaporator drain hole in the floorboard, etc.

In the case of disc brakes the use of correct hard lines back to the distribution block and the factory proportioning valve, proper dust shields on the spindles, OE calipers, 2-piece rotors, etc.

Of course, stuff could have been replaced over the years, but a good hard look can reveal things.

Sometimes you get real lucky and can find the Factory build sheet hidden in the dash, under the carpet, etc. Also sometimes there are markings on the radiator support. These were used on the assembly line to tell the workers which options to install.

Other than those, you are limited to playing investigator with former owners and the small details as described by Woodchuck.

Thanks for the replies. I believe there are stamped holes for the A/C and I will do some more investigating.

Photos, we need photos.

Amateur restorer. Well, sometimes I have been paid for it. But not right now.

You did not state, nor did anyone ask if your coupe is a GT. If so, it came from the factory with disc brakes. Someone else may be able to tell both of us whether discs could be ordered as an option on a model other than a GT. I cant say that I recall seeing factory discs on other models. A/C is another story. I'm certain it was not model specific.

My 66 was all original. Had FoMoCo parts and aluminum tags on control arms. The factory markings and tags are clues to origin parts like the radiator comments above. Pictures might help the experienced senior members identify parts for you also.
