Brake light switch?

Got the car all back together after putting in the roller clutch pedal. Was going to take it for a test spin and a buddy noticed that the brake lights weren't coming on.

I pulled off the connector leading to the switch and shorted the wires and the lights came on so the problem is that the switch isn't making contact when I step on the brake pedal.

Is there a special way the switch is supposed to go on the pedal?

It doesn't seem that the master cylinder push rod is compressing the switch. I am using the same switch as before and it was working but I did add a plastic bushing over the brake pedal post to take up room between the post and the master cylinder push rod.

Thanks in advance.

The pedal is supposed to release the switch, not press it in when you step on it. Contact is made when the button is out and that's supposed to happen as soon as you push on the pedal.
