I am trying to put urethane bushings in the front eyelet of the leaf springs on my 1969 GT350, I have the rubber out but there is a steel sleeve remaining. Does the steel sleeve need to be forced out of the eyelet to put in the new bushings? was the steel sleeve part of the original bushing? Any suggestions on the easiest way to get the sleeve out?
Yes, it needs to come out if you are using the Energy suspension bushings. Use a hammer and drift. It will take awhile. If the spring is out, the machine shop I usually use will press them out for me.
Use a sawzall to cut the bushing lengthwise inside the eye of the spring. Then drive a chisel between the bushing and the spring right at the cut. As you peel the bushing up it will fall out at some point.
I used a piece of pipe and my Harbor Freight 12T press to press out the sleeves. Energy Suspension bushings then went in.
