Several months ago I ordered a complete rear drum kit. It comes preassembled with all of the brake parts attached to a new backing plate. When I went to install the kit I noticed the new drums are 11 inch and my old ones are I think, 10.75. The backing plate fits perfectly but the opening for the center opening for the drum that fits over the axel is wider by 1/4 inch so there is room between the axel and the drum. The lugs line up perfectly. I'm wondering if I should get a smaller drum and kit, or does it really matter that the seal around the axel and the drum is not tight?
The backing plate fits around the shaft opening just like my old ones. The same diameter. It fits. It's the diameter of the center hole in the drum that doesn't fit tightly around the end of the shaft. The lugs line up it's just that the center hole is bigger than the end of the axel. I just looked at the Invoice and what I ordered is the FORD SMALL BEARING FOR 2" X 3-3/8" FLANGE. The question is can I use the drum with the wider center hole?
Your issue is the brake drum(s). They need to match the "register" of the hub as well as the offset of the backing plate. Backing plate, axle and drum need to all match. One, or more, of these don't.
Thanks guys. It's the drum. The lugs don't seem to come out far enough through the drums either. I did not know the end of the axel/hub is called the register. Thanks Woodchuck. Now I can explain it to the parts supplier better when I call for the replacement.
Turns out after doing some research there is a retainer/spacer that is need to fill the void. The supplier sells them but did not include in the kit. I may need to get longer lugs pressed in though.
May have to go with the correct drum because I'm having a heck of time finding that spacer. I'm told the company that sold me the kit sells the spacer, but they won't be open until tomorrow. The article I read said that most auto parts stores carry them. Well I went to three of them and no dice.
I ran into this several years ago, I found the elusive pair of backing plates allowing fitment of 10 x 2 1/2 shoes to an 8" rear. The drums that fit have the larger hole and the 8" rear I have has the small diameter holes. I took an axle and a drum to a local machine shop and had them make me a pair of rings to fit. I used a couple small dabs of silicone to hold them in place. I sold the entire setup to Joe (JE942010) a few months ago, I had switched to rear disc brakes and the parts were laying around taking up space.
I got the spacers from the supplier. Seems they forgot to include them in my order. All is good now, they do exist!
