While trying to figure out what engine was in my mustang, I came across the sticker on the valve covers 289 Special, does anyone know anything about this motor? it looks like its original to the car but i didnt think ford put them in mustangs? the valve covers looks like they were orange at one time.
It's an A or D code 289 4V. The earlier D code had the same low compression as the C code 2V engine. The A code was higher, with flat-top pistons, and required premium fuel. The sticker in question was more of a sales promotion than engine description. Don't get me wrong, though, the A or D code are desirable. Yours is painted the wrong color. If it was originally installed in a Ford car, it should be gloss black with gold air cleaners and valve covers. That "Special" decal is available new.

Bob Mannel says Too Easy - you're incorrect. I quote "Many 1964 Fairlane 289 2V's received a 289 Special decal" (the decal pictured by the OP) "on their left valve cover. Engines with the 289 Special decal were actually no different than those without. The decal appeared to be just a part of Ford's dress-up campaign."
The 64 Fairlane 289 2V had a black long block with red air cleaner and valve covers. Ford's red is actually closer to an orange than a true red.
Never seen the decal sticker before.
Throughout much sales literature you will find ~'66 4V engines referred as "Challenger Specials." Some '65 as well.
However I was thinking at the same time the 2V were called "Challengers." ???:nerd:
22GT - the vin on the car shows it should be an A code engine, but it looks like it has a 2v manifold and carb? any way the car would have been purchased with that engine or maybe just a engine swap at some time?
Engine was swapped at some point in time, most likely.
