I got my replacement block in and noticed a place where the real seal goes that had been damaged in shipping. My question is, how big of a concern is this? It's toward the back of the engine and I was thinking that it would not be a big issue. However, Grabber Blu suggested it may be on my build thread, so that has prompted this thread (if a member on the forum questions it, I like to get more opinions and thank Grabber for questioning it).
I want to be sure on this block after the problem I had with the previous block. Is this a big issue, minor issue, rear seal will seal with it removed or do I need to have a bit of machining done to correct it?
I did Z. He had the following advice "It is a shame that this happened in transit however even if that chunk fell out, the seal would still seal as the bad part is on the outside. I would carefully grind the area large enough to install the seal and that way you cannot further damage the area. It would not take much effort as the seal just slips in." Not all he wrote but I think this is the pertinent part.
He also explained how to get the pin out of the cap for the new seal (which I did not do on the block I have in the car currently). So this was a bit of knowledge for me from him as well.
By the way, I am in no way questioning Fred, just simply getting a 2nd opinion as I want to be sure this go around.
You could take a dremel and open up the damaged-narrow portion. Then if you install a 2 piece seal use a little silicone"gasket maker like Loctite 598 or Permatex ultra black 82180" on the back and sides of the seal.
Best thing would be to have it machined for a 1 piece seal
This would be the best solution, especially the block is bare. Cost is like $75-$80 and I would pay double not to have that annoying drop of oil always on the bellhousing
Be a heck of a lot easier to have it done/fixed right at this point. Not any fun to have a major leak when everything is together and installed in the car.
Referencing OP's photo 2- exactly what is cut away when the block is machined for a one piece seal?
Are both of the grooves machined completely away leaving a flat surface all the way up to the main bearing saddle?
