Sunday was dry so I took the Mustang across town to look at a project and at a stoplight I got honked at by a guy in a light blue 67 with a flowery print vinyl top (Austin Powers comes to mind). Those are kind of rare aren't they? I had almost forgot about them; It sure took me back!

Did the guy driving have a big collar shirt open three buttons with a gold medallion? I have vague memories of patterned vinyl tops (and lots of other things from the early 70's) but I always assumed they were aftermarket additions. Those weren't factory options, were they?

A friend of mine bought a new Maverick in 1970 with a pasley top. It also had Houndstooth? interior. He said it was factory. It was a new car.......It was BUTT ugly.......

I am suprised there are any left, let alone being driven.

I was just reading a book on cars of the 60's and I remember reading about these tops. They were dealer options that you could order from a catalogue.

I worked at a Ford dealer in '68-'69. IIRC these were only available as a dealer add-on from local shops, not from the factory.

We would add on anything that the customer would pay for and the salesman could promise/dream-up! Even saw teardrop spotlights added to a 'stang. It hurts now to think about putting that big drill bit through that roof pillar. Must have rusted through in 10 years or less (Texas Gulf Coast!).

Or how about the houndstooth vinyl topped Mercury Cougars!

That's right! And didn't Dodge have a kind of lizard-skin vinyl top going on about then too? I remember a guy in college that had a demon with a half-top done in that horrid stuff.

That one sorta has a 'South of the Border' look to it, or maybe just desert southwest? Actually the one I saw was a sort of (it was indeed faded) salmon and white two toned flowery, Rowen and Martin's "Laugh-In" flavor to it.

I certainly have learned something here today..
