When I replaced the u-joints on my 66/289/8" open a couple of months ago, I noticed the yoke on the front of the 8" housing had a lot of slop in it. I have "tightened" these up before on cheby's with my IR 1/2" impact with no problems. I tried this on the stang and it still has a lot of slop. I am going to replace the rear wheel bearings/seals..etc soon and was thinking I could replace the crush sleeve or washer, whatever it's called if it's not too dificult to get into. Can I replace this with out pulling the 3'd member? Assumption is to pull the yoke and maybe a seal ( I have replaced these on 2 cheby's) then a front bearing and finally the crush sleeve. maybe somebody could set me straight on this before I make a big mess...
I am assuming this would then take the slop out of the yoke??? thanks for any help... ::
if you have that much slop its not the sleeve its the bearings that are worn out. sounds like you need to pull it and rebuild it. my .02c and I build them for a living.
If the ring and pinion have a good wear pattern, you can replace the pinion bearings with no problem. The crush sleeve (4662) does nothing more than "preload" the bearings. As long as you keep the shims together when you take the front of the differential off, you should have no problem with reassembly. I have built many 8 and 9 inch Ford diffs, and the weak link in them is this stupid collapsable sleeve. That's why the NASCAR boys replace them with a solid steel spacers and preload the bearings with shims instead. But for street duty, the sleeve is just fine. Remember to put a new o-ring on the pinion support, and replace the seal.
