Default Calling 70 Mach 1 Experts:: 5 questions..

In 69 I know that the door data plate denotes a "63C" for a mach 1. What does it say to verify authenticity for a 70

Did any 70 sportsroofs with factory smallblocks come with a c6 automatic?

Where are the partial VIN stampings located on the 351C, C6 and the 9" rearend?? I know where it is on the 351W but that doesnt help me here..

Also, if its not a numbers matching block how can I tell what year the motor is?

And finally, by using the door info. can I tell if its an M code or and H code and again how can i decipher that on the door data plate or buck tag? I forgot---sorry....

thx..

I can quickly answer 2 of your questions. The small block C6 was not available in the Mustang in 1970. 302's used the C4 and 351's used the FMX. The date stamp on a 351C is near the pan rail under the starter.

On a 1970 Model (2) things you are seeking are in the Vin Tag

If your car is a Mach 1 the numbers 05 apear in the vin sequence (I think it is the THIRD and FOURTH digit) If it is a regular fastback it is 02

The engine code will be the FIFTH digit

T 6CL 200
L 6CY 250
F 8CY 302
G 8CY 302 HO BOSS MUSTANG
H 8CY 351 2V
M 8CY 351 4V

Q AND R CODE 428

Z 429

Unfortunatley Ford used a sticker on the 70 and up models on the door for the information that previousely used a nice metal tag, It still provides the same information but usually has been painted over or is unreadable. Hope this helps

The 70 Mach I vin will have 05 for third and fourth character. Fastback is 02. The engine code is always the fifth character (H or M in this case).

Ummm... In a word: No.

63C means a 69 is a sportsroof (aka fastback), not a Mach 1. There is no indication on the door data plate that a car is a true Mach 1 in 69, although there are things that can rule out a car as not being a true Mach 1.

Good luck,
-Rory

Oops! I had a brain hiccup... there is no way to tell from the VIN that the car is a Mach1, but the data plate would indicate a 63C for a real Mach 1. The issue is, as pointed out below, that door plates can be swapped, missing, or restamped/reproduced and as such are not reliable indicators of a Mach 1.

63C means the deluxe interior. It has nothing to do with the Mach I except the Mach I had the deluxe interior as standard.

I believe the second best way to identify a 69 Mach I is the exterior colour code. A colour code plus "5" means the car had a blackout hood. The blackout hood was standard on the Mach I.

The best way to identify a 69 Mach I is the Marti report.

63C = Mach 1 in 1969 and 1970 check your books boys

63A = 2 DOOR FASTBACK

63A = Sportsroof Standard
63B = Sportsroof deluxe interior
63C = Sportsroof Mach 1 Package

Don't rely on the door for determining what kind of car it is. All it'd take is for the drivers door to have been replaced and repainted. The real way is to look at the dash VIN to determine if it's a mach.

No C6 AFAIK on the small block cars, as stated before.

I don't believe the rear axle had VIN stampings and only some of the engines/trans got the stampings. Date codes may be your best bet in determining if the motor is original or "correct"

My 71 Mach1 with a 351C-4v came with a C6. I'm surprised the 70 only had the FMX.
Are you sure the C6 didn't come with the 351C-4v in 70?
The door plate has the tranny code. To be really sure of what you have, get a Marti deluxe report. They're only about $35

No small block C6 in Mustangs in 1970. 100% certain. They didn't show up in Mustangs until 1972 or 1973. I'm not certain what year it was.

My 71 origionally had a small block C6, definatly "100% certain". Not sure about 70, just surprised they didn't, since the C6 was in cars before 70.

Typo. It should have been 71-73.
