There used to be a time I could pump the gas pedal twice and the car would start right up. Now, even after rebuilding the carb, it takes about 10 pumps or so. I know my choke must not be set quite right but I can't figure it out. The car runs great otherwise.
So, what sayeth ye all? How many pumps do you give your car?
10 is too many. I'm thinking 1 should be enough to reset throttle values and the choke and give you the fumes you need to get 'er going.

It resets on the first pump, just doesn't start with it.

You mean out of the fuel bowl? If I turn it over and pump it is actually worse. That usually results in screwing up the choke and it makes it not sit on the fast idle cam. When I give it the 10 pumps (or so) it starts right up and fast idles the way it supposed to.
If my car is sitting for days....pump a few times, turn it over (no start), pump a few more times, turn it over, START (maybe), pump a few more times, turn it over, START.
40+ year old carb (rebuilt a few years ago) and 40+ year old mechanical fuel pump.
I still love it.

If you have an electric choke and it is working properly, you should not have to "pump" at all but just turn the key on and put the accelerator to the floor once and let up then turn the key to start. The engine should start immediately, if the choke and everything else is working properly.
When your pumping, Is it actually getting a full stream from the accelerator pump or is it just spitting.?
It gets a nice stream, so I guess that should mean the bowl is full.

Mine can do that at times as well. Could this be fuel pump related?

Daily driver here, in the mornings two pumps and then turn the key and have startup. after eight hours of sitting at work I just turn the key and pump at the same time. Monday mornings I give it about four pumps because I don't drive it on the weekends.

When mine was a daily driver 15 years ago that is exactly how it behaved.
So I guess there is something wrong with mine. Seems it only should take 1-2 pumps. Man, I have no idea what to look for now. I've messed with it so many times I know that carb better than the driver's seat.
When the cars cold, I fully depress, then release, the throttle pedal (one time) to set the choke plate and engage the fast idle cam, then I crank it over and it starts. If it's not completely cold I just crank it over and it starts. Edelbrock 750 with electric choke.
