Default Engine gurus, oil leak question. UPDATED-PROBLEM SOLVED!

Found the problem! It turned out there was a nick in the upper half of the rear main seal. Don't have a clue how it got there. The engine builder was surprised to hear it. Who knows when it happened. Could of happened when it was made and packaged. Could have happened when it was taken out of the package. You had to look closely to see the nick. But it was all the way through the lip of the seal. The oil was being turned black when the oil dripped between the heat shield of the scattershield and the block. Two pieces of metal rubbing together with oil between them will make the oil black. So kind of pain to pull everything apart, but at least I won't have a motor that leaks oil now.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.
Full size the picture to see the nick.

Glad to hear it, that kind of problem will have you second guessing everything.

I had a similiar mind bender this week, intermittent stumble on a 67 fastback 289 4spd, it would sometimes do it when it was cold, hot when accelerating and when decelerating.I tracked it down to a bad coil, this was after questioning everything over and over, turns out the new coil I got was bad too so I spent a good part of the day rechecking everything until I figured out Napa gave me a new bad coil!

Congrats on your fix

Wow such a small nick, did you have to pull the engine to replace it?

Glad you found it but too bad it was the rear main seal. Always a pain in the butt!

No. Drop the engine crossmember, unobolt the steering idler arm and the pan drops down. Then I had to unbolt all my main caps as I use a main stud girdle. Then pull of the cap. The seal is a 2 piece. Grabbed the top piece above the crank with a pair of pliers and pulled it out. Just reversed everything. Not as bad as you might think to do.
