Default Rear Differential

I pulled out the diff to change the leaking gasket, and give it a good cleaning since it has been sitting for the last 32 years.

My problem is the ID tag is broken off and I want to know if I have a locking or non-locking diff. The VIN says it is the 3.00 gear. It has a white "2" at the top of the carrier and either a "77" or "99" on the side (inspection markings I guess).

On the ring gear there is C4OW 4210B followed by 3 572 shift No. 2. There is also another inspection mark of a white "3" on the backside of the crownwheel.

Anybody know, is there anything else to look for?

Thanks,
Jason

The gears don't matter. You need to look inside the differential unit the ring gear is bolted on and see if there are clutch plates in it. If so it is a traction lock.

You can normally tell by the surface of the carrier where the ring gear is bolted. If this area is flat, it is an open rear end. If there are recesses were the bolts are inserted it is a stock clutch type. If you post a picture of yours we can tell you pretty easily.

Picture or jack up both rear wheels and spin one of them.
Other wheel goes in the opposite direction = open carrier, spins the same way = locking

The differential in the picture is an open rear. You can tell by the way the bolts that secure the ring gear are,on equa lok rears there would be a shoulder around the bolts.

Yup... non-locking (open) carrier. Just changed gears & rebuilt mine.

Thanks guys, now I won't need any of the friction additive.
