I don't understand your question. Do you mean the wheel itself seems loose or the steering has play in it?

is it a power steering car or manual?

the steering wheel is on tight
but it will travel about 1-2" w/o turning the front wheels
i know on the wwii jeeps
there is a lot of linkages
and one would need to check each one

As safely as possible and without the car running of course... have your son turn the steering wheel left & right while you watch under the car for loose joints.

It's likely the ball stud joint where the pitman arm connects to the center link.

if you are uncomfortable with this sort of thing then it's an easy inspection for most tire/brake/alignment shops.

it's really pretty simple stuff though. ball stud joint at pitman/centerlink, idler arm bushing or joint, then the tie rod ends.

of course there is the steering box itself but... I'd think more likely one or a combination of some of the above joints mentioned.

here is the tool we made tonight to remove and tighten
the wiper switch knob bezel
just used a cut off tool to cut out
a regular screwdriver
worked great

Get out the real paper Factory Service Manual, and adjust the steering exactly as directed. Only then will you be able to determine if the linkage also needs work.

Well, if that's the switch in your photo, it's trash now, get a new one.

we did get a new one!
haven't tackled the SW play yet.
did have some trouble with the passenger door tho.
one couldn't open it from the inside!
one had to roll down the window and push the outer door release button
but.......the solution was simple,
we checked the lock mechanism and found that
the screws that held it in the door ends were
about to fall out.
tightened them up
and the door works fine now.
what next..................

i've looked up what a 'toploader' transmission is
but have a question.
these replaced the T-10's which were side loaders,
wouldn't the transmission oil tend to run out of these?
