Hey everybody I hope all is well. I have a quick question.. I'm looking at a 1965 vinyl top coupe and the vinyl top was taken off and the top of the car was painted to match the car. Does taking the vinyl top off the car and making it one solid color like a standard coupe hurt the value of it? I hope this isn't a stupid question just curious too know. Thanks for any info. Take care
I agree with some on this thread, I love the look of a vinyl top.
I pull my original vinyl a few months ago, and had no rust just a lot of brown glue that scared me at first sight until I got some mineral spirits to it.
New vinyl will be going back on
Interesting. My '66 factory GT coupe "A" code has the bench seat and a vinyl top. It doesn't stay out in the hot sun here in FL so that may help in the lifetime of the roof.
I don't know about the rust issues associated with vinyl tops. My parents had a mid 70s Skylark and an early 80s Oldsmobile and they both got rust under the vinyl top when they weren't all that many years old. My friend has a 2000 Lincoln and its had rust under the vinyl top for about 5 years now.
I had a 72 Gran Torino and it blistered under the vinyl top at age two. Ford saved a lot of money by not painting the tops-maybe primer. Another thread about 3 weeks ago dealt with this situation and pics. Remember pulling the shredded vinyl top off on a 66 parts car. The roof had a blanket of rust, not a trace of the original color.
My luxury 67 Lime Gold California coupe has a white vinyl top and it is striking. The white over the green looks so cool. I know the common sentiment is that coupes in general aren't worth much and aren't very desirable, but I think a nice, original, highly optioned coupe w/ a vinyl top can hold it's own in this crazy arena. I installed a new top because it is another option you can add/have on your car and for purists it is part of the cars original character. If you simply can't stand the look of a vinyl roof, fill in the holes and paint it, it probably will not lose any value points, but if you don't feel like doing all that body work just to delete a vinyl roof, install a new one and enjoy!
