I'm having a bit of a time deciding what to do. My car, as many may know, has already been painted, cut and buffed. The project was not done in the proper order,(i.e. underbelly was not addressed at the shop 12 years ago). My goal would be to have the underside look as good as the topside… but I know that short of putting the car on a rotisserie, I'm not going to get the opportunity to make that happen (also have no intention of dismantling the car at this point).
So my dilemma is how to clean, treat and paint or undercoat the bottom of the car from the firewall back (I've already painted under the front end) without ruining the finish that is already on the car.
At first glance, the underside looks fairly clean actually but there are plenty of areas that have road muck as well. I wish it was as easy as pressure washing and painting. Figured I better do something now as I'm ready to remove the rear end/suspension and all cables, etc.
Maybe just put the car on 12ton jack stands 20" in the air and live on a creeper for a week scrubbing with a wire brush (not out of the question) wearing goggles.
Hellofa time to deal with this I know… but its how it is.
Any input is appreciated from best way to clean/strip and paint/undercoat.

When i did the underside of mine I used jackstands and A heat gun and putty knife and removed the undercoating, scuffed it up and reapplied new undercoating. I have owned a mustang that i had painted the underside but it is not practical on a car you plan on driving. my engine compartment is painted the color the car will be (silver/blue) all the way to the seam by the trans crossmember. The frame rails and subframe connectors are painted Eastwoods Ceramic chasis black. it all looks very nice.
cmefly: jack stands and a scrubber .... also have heat gun... will try that as well... unfortunately we can't get eastwoods here in California (they won't sell it).
Was hoping for some easily applied epoxy paint or some alternative (legal in Ca) to the ceramic paint.

How about soda blasting... or would this ruin the rest of the car's finish. I've used a sandblaster before and that is obviously OUT of the question.

TCP Global is based in California. I'm sure they would be able to help you with your needs. Even living on opposite coast, I use them frequently for their good prices.

I used a braided wire cup wheel (very messy but effective) and truck bed liner on mine from a rattle can. I'm happy with it, but as always YMMV

thanks for the replies... looks like 20" jack stands and the wire brush, heat gun and scraper... since it's not too too bad, I'll start by touching up here and there, clean all under with super clean and then wipe down, prime where needed and recoat with either undercoat or truck bed liner... with my sirius radio set to Margaritaville, I'll be scrubbing and scraping while I decide...
