Default t5 , good deal?

I just randomly search for t5s to maybe swap in my car and thought if i found a good deal on one I would get one.. Would this be a good deal?

Quote:
2 T5 TRANSMISSIONS, 1 CAME OUT OF A 1994 COBRA MUSTANG, THE OTHER CAME OUT OF A V8 MUSTANG, BOTH
HAVE SOME BAD GEARS, $290.00 FOR BOTH
If so what would I need to look for to make sure they aren't rebuildable?

i would pass on those crap can T5's (broken gears for $295 ) when you bust a gear, most of the time the mating cluster gear shreds too.

A good deal on a T5 looks like this:

T5 from 87-93 Mustang V8. Came from car with low miles. Shifts perfectly.

Run! It would cost you more to have one have those T5s rebuilt than it would to buy a new one.

Unless you're already very familiar with rebuilding these transmissions and could do it all yourself, buy a new one.

The example posted above by Asm109 would be fine. But such examples are pretty hard to come by these days. Pretty much any used T5 pulled from a car will have over 250,000 miles on it.

There were a lot of different spec T5's made too. Look for a T5z or cobra spec if you can. With patience you can find a cherry for a great price.

Apparently, everywhere!

Consider a whole lot of T5 transmissions were bolted behind the 5.0 V8 engines. And those were very durable engines. My next door neighbor drives an 80's era Capri with a 5.0 and a T5. That car has almost 300,000 miles on the original engine! Sure, it leaks oil and burns some too. But, by golly it still runs pretty well! Apparently, everyone who owned that car changed the oil religiously.

I'd pass. I bought a T-5 with a blown 1st gear a few year's ago, thinking it could be rebuilt.

Everyone I took it to said it was junk. Not worth rebuilding. I ended up only keeping the casing.

what about this..

Quote:
I have a '92 World class T5 which came out of my ex- Mustang. It shifts perfectly but has always had a whine in 1,2,3rd gears. I'm told most of them do. 4th and 5th are dead quiet. It has about 110K miles on it. I dont have the bell housing ;just the trans.and a B&M ripper shifter.
The person is asking 125$+ shipping.

My second T-5 was noisy but shifted fine. I had it rebuilt with no issue's.

I paid $75 for one with a "blown third gear". I haven't done anything with it yet, but I figured it was worth a $75 gamble to see if I could do a rebuild on it, replace that gear and see if it works.

this one would be about $200 shipped. Or should I just keep trying to look for one local?

8 or 10 years ago I bought one from a wrecking yard but didn't install it for more than 6mo. BAD mistake! By the time I bought a T-5 rebuild kit and 2nd gear I was out over $800. This was back when new ones could be had for $1050.
