Good luck man! I don't rush anything and try to enjoy the experience as much as possible.
Thanks for the kind words. Its really not all that bad. The pictures make it worse than it is and honestly the passenger side rear rocker is the worst bit of the car.

Default Update

Lots of work done this week. I purchased the new quarters, rear frame rails, and the roof skin. The roof and quarters were made by dynacorn. All parts were purchased from Mustangs Unlimited.

I am not happy with the quality of the reproduction frame rails but they still work with a little motivation. Make sure you measure from the shackle mount and not from the flanges on the frame rail when fitting!! They are different dimensions than the factory frame rails!!

The dynacorn quarter panel is a different story. That baby fit on pretty nice. The only areas that are tricky are the area where it is welded to the rocker panel and where it meets the trunk header panel in back of the rear window. Both areas needed repair on my car but after a little patching and modification it fits nicely in both areas. I will take pics of the rocker area once it is fully repaired.

Nothing will be welded until the new roof is on except the trunk floor.

New frame rail (note the crappiness)

Motivational test fit:

This is where I am at now.. the rocker panel and the b pillar both need some attention.

The rear is coming together well. Tomorrow I will test fit the drivers side quarter. The passenger rocker is almost done except the welds have to be ground. I will be keeping this car and completing it. The doors will be re-skinned soon.

Thanks Manley.

I have been working on the drivers side door. The car included a new skin for it. The frame is not in the best of shape but it was salvageable. The skin I used on this door is different than the new skin that I bought for the passenger door. I do not like it at all. It required a lot of modification and still does not fit well. I may buy a new one. It also has a square cutout where the mirror attaches (I'm assuming for the remote mirror option?) I had to buy a new lower hinge too. I rebuilt the upper hinge. I also tried fitting the new front fender. It will need some motivation to fit as well. I keep waiting for the day that something actually fits without a major hassle (not holding my breath ) I will play around with the door some more tomorrow.

Progress pics

I don't mind using the repop stuff.

I tried to save a door once by putting skins on it. Man, that damned door had more ripples than the ocean after all of the welding {and I did wait between tack welds for them to cool, but the metal was so thin it still warped}.

I would have been better off to have just purchased a repop door, and just played with the end gaps as that would have been less welding, and I would have saved a ton of time, which is something you really get aware of as the years go by.

-Mtrain I have thought a lot about that for next time but those door shells are $400 a piece.. The drivers door came out pretty well. Hopefully the passenger side comes out just as well

I found a nice set of torque thrust d's on craigslist for $400. The tires are pretty good. The rear tires look a little small but I'll just wait it out and see what it looks like when its sitting on all 4's. The rear valance is going to need some loving. It is not rusty but it looks like someone dropped something on it so it twisted a bit. Progress has been slow lately due to the end of the semester and a ton of tests, papers, and now studying for finals this coming week. After that, I will have a good part of the summer to get some serious work done. Here are some pics:

Wow!!
Looking really good!!
Doing a resto myself I know the work involved. Are you painting your self also?
I'm just doing the rust repair on ours and leaving the paint work to the pro's.

I'll keep watching this one.

looks like you are making a lot of good progress.

the re-pop metal is super thin. my deck lid needed more material on the front edge, and I took my time welding on a piece of rod and it still warpped A LOT!

its coming along nicely though!

-Lynnbob: Thanks. I read your thread too. Your car is coming along nicely. I will be doing the painting as well.

-Junior: Thank you. I am not a fan of anything "new." It seems like it takes more time to make new panels fit than it does to just repair the old stuff. My deck lid will probably need a strip on the bottom rear lip to make it match the quarter extensions. It doesn't look terrible though. I will definitely need to do some work with the quarter to decklid gaps as they are wider toward the header panel than in the back. As of this date, no repro parts have fit (anywhere close to) properly lol.

A lot of time was spent getting the fenders to fit decently. I spent a couple of days getting the front end and doors aligned. They are not perfect but look much better than most. The gaps will need a little work in a few places. I decided to buy the new passenger door shell. The old one was just too far gone. The drivers door that I reskinned actually fits better than the new repro shell. I also started work on the drivers side wheel well. It is complete now and all I have left to do before the outer wheel wells are welded is to patch the drivers side B pillar. I should have the quarters and trunk floor welded in this week.

Looks great! Are your front fenders the originals or did you buy some repros?

Ford.P51: The fenders are repros. I highly recommend that you look for some originals.. The repros did not fit without a lot of fuss. I had to cut the reinforcement panel near the door jamb and bend it at the body lines to make it fit. The lower body line does not match the door perfectly either.

Junior2561: Thanks
