Default Rear Spoiler Questions!

Didn't put this in the Concours section because, well, my car isn't concours. lol

Anyway, I want to put a rear spoiler on my '69 Mach 1 and have located a well used original. I need to do some work to the fiberglass and paint it before installing it. So the 1st question is, what color should I use? I know it should be a flat black of some sort, but is there a correct color in a spray bomb? Paint code or part #'s would be great!

Next issue is drilling the holes. Since the car has never had a spoiler and it is an early '69, there are no cut outs in bottom of the trunk lid either. Where can a get a GOOD template for the holes? I will be buying the brackets as well so I want to make sure the holes are perfect! I know NPD used to have one online but it seems to be gone.

Also, since the old spoilers are HEAVY, I suspect I will need the prop rod setup. Any templates for those?

Thanks,
Dan

If you buy the brackets there will be no doubt as to where the holes go.

The rod attaches in the extreme upper right corner of the decklid pattern. The storage clip is in the center of the decklid. The lower end hooks in a hole in the RH end cap-

I use one of the hollow NPD rear spoilers. Looks great and it's an excellent reproduction of the original as far as appearance. No prop rod needed for mine.

I think I would go with a good quality repop. Originals tend to sag really bad in the middle. I don't care what any one says, I would rather have a non sagging spoiler on a good looking Mach 1 or Boss then have a concurs correct old saggy and baggy one.

Old spoilers are kind of like older woman's boobs, the older they are the more they sag..

That gave me a good laugh.

I made a trade deal with a guy and am getting what he claims is a nice straight one. If it's not, I'm sure he will work it out with me. If I had bought one, I would have gone with a repop, but I swapped for stuff I wasn't using.

I appreciate the pics for the prop rod. Not 100% sure if I will use one or not, but now I know how it goes.

Anybody have paint codes or spray can part numbers? Need to make it look right.

I have an original spoiler on my 70 Mach 1.

Instead of installing a prop rod, try replacing your trunk hinges. I hesitated on using the prop rod, since I was never able to determine if it was originally used. I doubt it was.

I used to keep the trunk up with a stick.

When my car was with my body/paint guy about a year ago. I gave him a set of repro hinges to try, while the car was disassembled. He installed them and they work great.

I also bought a rod, just in case the hinges didn't work.

I also researched the color for the spoiler at the same time. the most I could come up with was this (from an old e-mail to my pain/body guy, while researching correct colors for him) "Rear Spoiler - Low-Gloss Textured Black". I couldn't find a paint code or spray bomb color.

He was able to get a great match from an old 'Cuda he was working on. If I remember right, I think it was the same color/texture as the Cuda hood.

Hope this helps.
