Oh, and whether or not you tailpipes on your makes a big difference on sound and noise level. Dumps at the axle will be very loud and rattle the inside of the car. Run pipes all the way to back of the car and it will significantly quiet the car down, especially in the interior.
I second that, it really makes an unbelieveable difference....

The angle of the dumps makes a slight difference as well. As does no dumps at all but shooting straight out of the mufflers. I had Flowmasters on one of my old supercharged cars and forget the series but just remember "big block 2 chambers" but on a small block car. Those with 3" pipes off the headers resulting in an insanely loud car. I remember just cruising down the freeway and setting off a sensitive building alarm with that car. I also remember getting pulled over countless times and receiving many tickets for that exhaust.
I really like my 40s, h-piped, 2.5 flowmasters. They are out the valance no drone but they are loud. Not hollow as on my stock 351 truck with 40s. I think they sound much better on a motor that is "built" than a stocker.

I'm using the Magnaflow 15816 kit. and am very pleased with the sound. It's plenty loud but not overbearing. The motor is a well built 418W, mid length headers, tailpipes through the valance.

I forgot about that with the first set of 40s I had. They were pretty basey with the first motor combo which was basically a stone stock factory 302. I later on swapped the entire top end and added an aggressive cam. The end result was a motor around 10.25:1 to 10.5:1 compression, heads and even intake were milled down a ton. The exhaust tone at that point was much better.
I currently have the 40 series flowmasters. I had them dumped before the rear axle and they were pretty loud. I have since ran them all the way out to the rear valance and it helped somewhat. Around 65-70 mph they will drive you crazy with the drone. I am going to try the magnaflows in a few weeks and hope they help.

Nice Ride! What suspension did you use on the front? Did you modify your transmission tunnel to fit the t56?

Thanks. We used the Heidts mustang II front suspension. No mods to the trans tunnel. Was able to get the engine & drivetrain low enough to have room to clear.
Had the Flowmaster 40's, way to much drone. These mustangs are loud enough with all the road, tire and air noise. Running Dynomax VT's and could not happier with the sound and performance.

i found Flowmaster stamps on mine... no mention to the series, turned down at the axle, sounds great on the streets, but i would love to be able to have a decent conversation in my coupe... anyone know where to find the series?

I think you can count the baffles (looking at the welds) 2 V's = 40, 3 V's = 50, 1 V = 20's Then the 60-80's are various in let/out let configs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I've got Flowies too but does get annoying on the freeway going 3500 rpm. Might look into Mags. Just need to know what Mags sounds good.

I too like the Magnaflows. I have them on my 70 Mach and great sound on acceleration without the load tinny sound. I carried the 2.5" pipe to the rear valance. Yes, I was also the high school kid in the 70's who put glasspacks on my 67 Cougar GT and dumped at the axle. Maybe that explains some of my hearing loss today.
