Default New with some questions...

Hi all, I'm brand new to the forum, but I figured I'd drop in and say hi. I am also brand to to any vintage car but looking at a 1971 mustang fastback. I'm sorry if I post in the wrong spot but I had a few questions that maybe you folks could point me in the right direction.

1. The car needs interior work; new seats, dash, maybe gauges, any ideas on ballpark price or a good place to start looking?

2. I am verifying but I was told they dropped a 400 crate in it, isn't that a truck engine?

3. I am planning on doing a restomod, aside from upgraded brakes and maybe steering, is there any other system that is a typical update?

Sorry for being so ignorant of everything but thanks for the help.

Welsome to the VMF

1. Easy way- check NPD/CJ's/Mustangs Unlimited, or any of the hundreds of vendors out there. Harder way: craigslist/ wandering through the many swap meets throughout the country/ be aware there are a few items that are not repoped for 71-73.

2. Not sure but it ain't factory mustang. Doesn't matter much if it runs good and you're happy. If it is a 400 Pontiac it is sacrilidge and should be removed immediately or irreversable harm will ensue.
3. Restomod means customized to the owners liking, Not factory Ford, or a particular recipe so I would drive it, and modify according to what you feel is needed. If you're doing a driver, brakes and steering may be adequate, (eg most do not need 4 wheel discs)

Welcome to VMF. You're just fine here unless you want info on racing mods, track racing etc.

1. Value of most any vintage/collector car is mainly dependant on condition. For example a high rust 71 fastback might be $1000, fully restotred maybe $20,000. A car with lots of rust patched up with bondo and poor repairs has very low actaul truthful value. You can be easily taken if you don't know what to look for.

2. 400 crate? Hmmm, sounds like maybe 400M hopefully someone will chime in...may well be truck engine. Wonder why?

3. Restomod is strictly up to you. You'll see a lot on here, keep browsing.

Hope VMF can help you enjoy the hobby,

Slim

Haha thanks for the advice, and of it was a Pontiac 400 I wouldn't buy it, because god knows what other devilry might have been done . I am just kind of trying to figure out how I want to go about all this, and am trying to fumble through this. The guy I'm buying it from is verifying the engine... (here's hoping he was wrong and it's a 429)

Actually I was looking for a 67-68 fastback mustang and mentioned it to a coworker at a staff appreciation event and he had a buddy that had a fastback he may be selling, but they didn't know anything about it. Anyways I got his number and got some info about it and it looks great from pics but I'm going to have to actually go take a look as the deal seems a little too good to be true. He was asking 7700 originally but dropped to 5500, says he is selling it to make room and cash or his other projects. At the very worst it is worth looking at. I can't upload pic from the phone but it looks pretty good.

Welcome to the best Mustang site on the 'net. A couple of key ideas: read, read, read and ask questions. You'll find a ton of help here.

Welcome... this is a great resource here, you will learn a lot.

As for the car...I'd worry more about rust then interior pieces, and engine if you're new to this.

Fix anything steel that has to be welded first.

2. I am verifying but I was told they dropped a 400 crate in it, isn't that a truck engine?
Truck, car, van… Never used in the Mustang, though.

3. I am planning on doing a restomod, aside from upgraded brakes and maybe steering, is there any other system that is a typical update?
Factory PS in the 71-73 is actually pretty good. Disc brakes are dead easy. Suspension work is probably where you need to concentrate.
