Default take your time

Know this. Cash talks, don't be afraid to talk someone down. I brought my 68 numbers matching ac car for 4500 when the seller was asking 8,000.00. But like everyone has said go over every inch of that car. I mean check everything from inside the trunk area, window seals down to the tranny tunnel. (if you have a "smart phone") via google, you can check the door tag against what he is telling you.

Heres others in your area that I found to might be good projects:

Thanks that sounds like a solid plan. Thanks for the links. Almost looks like $7000 will get me a nice looking car.

no kidding my old 67 leaked there really bad. Wondered why the floor pan was rusted through. You could see the ground when I was driving. The first day of rain I found out why the hole was there. It was a drain. LOL.

I plan to do all of that but I get nervous. How can I check the floor pans if there carpet over it. Will people let me remove the sill plates and pull up the carpet? I figure the ones that won't are the ones that are hiding something.

How do I check the cowl vents? It's been so long I'm not sure if you can see the round vents inside.

It takes just a few minutes to check the floor pans - so just ask. For the cowl vents, you'll also need to ask them first before you do this to save them the trouble of clean up (the owner should know if it leaks - cant hide that fact) ...fill up a 1/2 gallon milk jug w/water and have someone pour it (slowly) right into the outside vents while your inside on the ds/PS floor looking up with a flash-light. The DS vent couples itself to a floor vent above the high beam flow switch w/ a small knob; while the PS goes right into the end of the heater box...cant miss it - neither will you miss the flood if its leaking....

This repair itself introduced me to the "joy" of drilling out over 150 spot welds...I learned the hard way - so Im trying to save you the hassle...

Oh crap. I guess I need to get a welder. So you have to cut the old one out and replace the ends huh? How do you do that? I think I have seen a component that includes the whole top and bottom assembly. Is that not a popular opinion?

get under the car and start tapping and pushing the floor pan. Remember too much "under coating" is a evil thing that hides rust.....

I'm in Dallas and bought my (turns out) wrecked car with awful floor pans 6 cylinder for $2000, drove it for about 6 months before the water pump went out and I screwed up when replacing it by not replacing the 40 year old bolts too. Snapped one off in the engine block. Decided it was time for a full resto. Still working on it many years later, but heard my beautiful new powerful engine running earlier this year. I digress. The point I was getting at is that I felt the floor pans and they seemed solid, unfortunately though somewhere along the line an owner "fixed" the floor pan by adding thin sheet metal and "gluing it" to the rusted out pans with what appeared to be tar/roof caulk. This cost me probably well over an extra $1000 to have someone else fix. If you can/are willing to tackle yourself for around $500. Also had what looked to me like a straight body line. Turns out there was between 1/2" - 1" body putty that they "fixed" a wrecked rear driver side quarter panel. That was obviously an added expense too...

Think I might have found a nice project car. It's in my budget. Going to see it after the holidays. Any thoughts? Says it runs well. Has power brakes with front discs and power steering. Code C 289. Asked about rust and he said no. We will see. Does it sound like it's worth $4900. Hoping to get it for $4000
